Letter: Some voted to leave the rancor behind

EDITOR:

We the people of the United States of America to form a more perfect union voted for democracy not a plutocracy. I am a member of the 99 percent who voted against the trickledown effect that has severely crippled the middle class, divided out country and widened the gap between the top 1 and 47 percents.

I voted to re-elect President Obama because politics is compromise, it is difficult and it is putting people before politics. I voted to leave the rancor and acrimony behind and pull together as a nation to bring back a new burst of economic prosperity as we experienced post WWII and during the Clinton years. I voted for equal (racial and social) opportunity and jobs, the infrastructure bill that has passed the senate and awaits a congressional vote along with positive solutions to our national debt in a balanced and fair way where everyone pays their fair share. I voted for truthfulness, honesty and peacekeepers. I voted for a strong foreign policy that resolves conflict without the threat of force and peace, not war. I voted for vision and change of course direction forward from the reflective shallow, partisan behavior of the obstructive congressional party of "no." I voted for fair immigration policies, Planned Parenthood, more women in politics and the Affordable Care Act.

I voted against brazen voter suppression, gerrymandering, union busting, super-pack money, disrespect, dismissive, divisiveness attitudes and the blistering war on women. I voted against bogus, contemptuous views and repeal of affordable healthcare. I voted against greed and wealth of big corporations and CEO's, Wall Street, big banks and "corporations are people."

Our country is no longer the nation of "good ole boys." It is not the 1950s, but it is the 21st century with a growing melting pot of ethnicity promising new ideas and new philosophies who will be the future generations of voters.

Tomi Richardson

@ Read. Perhaps you should take your own advice and join the real world. The Middle East has been a dangerous disaster for centuries and is no more dangerous now than under Bush. Afghanistan has been a mess for decades and our withdrawal is the solution for us ( even your candidate agreed) and that is in the future. The path to the staggering debt started under Bush with his wars paid on credit , giveaway to big Pharma and tax cuts which are all still contributing to the escalating debt. If the wars end, we rescind the tax cuts and let Medicare negotiate with big Pharma, we can begin to address the catastrophe authored by Bush. There was never a concern for the debt until about a month into the Obama administration. We are not Greece, but many of their current problems are as a result of the austerity measures taken by their government which is the same path that republicans want to take this country down.

The Middle east has ALWAYS been a disaster, Afghanistan is STILL a mess but not our problem and the economy is on the brink because of Republican obstructionism. The debt HAS become truly staggering, MOSTLY because we just fought two wars on credit cards instead of paying for it in the budget. We are no way near the socialistic practices of Greece in our economy, and Social Security is not a cause of our deficit.

The letter writer is correct in that voter suppression must end. This is NOT the 1950s and trying to keep living as it is will destroy the Republican party.

Tomi, you bought it all.

I have a Christmas wish for all that pulled the lever for Obama.

By the end of these next four years you are broke and homeless.

Nothing short of that tough love will ever convince you otherwise.

You “feel” you have a right to “share the wealth” I say you need to partake in the misery.

Merry Christmas

You do not need to insult Tomi. I subscribe to the local paper to get local news. It is a right leaning paper that at times gives a balanced opinion. If you want balanced reporting DO NOT watch FOX or MSNBC they both rant and rage, however Morning Joe on MSNBC does have guests from the left and right. The older networks report the news rather than rhetoric. Regardless of your view please elect people who will govern with the ability to comprise, not the attitude if I don't get my way I will take my ball and go home.

Tomi,
You obviously know nothing about economics. I hope that you care enough about your children and grandchildren to not saddle them with this huge debt that Obama and the democrats are creating.
What is happening is totally unsustainable and the fiscal cliff will be nothing compared to the debt crisis that will hit in late 2013. No country can continue to spend money that they don't have and the Federal Reserves policy to monetize the debt will have very severe consequences for all of us down the road.
Keep listening to the likes of Chris Mathews, Ed Schultz, and Rachel Maddow and you will be one of those on the street begging for food to feed your family. I will prosper because I have already prepared for the fiscal calamity that is coming like a freight train.

Make up your mind.

"bring back a new burst of economic prosperity as we experienced post WWII"

"Our country is no longer the nation of "good ole boys." It is not the 1950s,"

Uhhh, the 1950's was post WWII.

"it is the 21st century with a growing melting pot of ethnicity "

Our immigration problem is not a melting pot. Our invaders from the south want to keep their language, take over the western states and make you and I pay for it. WAKE UP!

Tomi keep reading, there are more of us and less of them. That is why they lost the election. Women, young people, people of any color and anyone that is NOT self centered will continue to vote for what is right!

If you voted for truthfulness and honesty, you've clearly voted for the wrong person.

If you voted against "union busting", you clearly have not listened to what Obama has said about the Union who tore apart Hostess...

I feel sorry for you, you are now part of the group of Americans who have been brain washed by the most un-american president this Country has ever seen.

Tomi, your thoughtful words are wasted on the closed minds of the angry right wingers here. They are hoping for more hard times and wanted to bring back the policies of Bush that sunk us 4 years ago. Peace in the Middle East? Wasn't it Carter and Clinton that tried the hardest to make that happen? It sure wasn't the Republicans! Wasn't it the Republicans that went to Iraq and wasted a trillion dollars while ignoring Afghanistan so the Taliban could come back? Yes the economy could slide back into a recession thanks to the obstructionist do nothing Republicans that are willing to do anything to hurt the American people to further their political power. This election the majority of the American people saw though the lies and bull**** and voted for the President and his party. Fantasy land? The reality is the Republicans lost and you will continue to lose unless you put the American people first and quit catering to the corporations, the military-industrial complex, the hedge funds, oil companies, and the rich and privileged. Mitt Romney, George Bush and Donald Trump, Rush Limbaugh and O' Reilly are the face of your party and it doesn't appeal to rest of America.

Nice letter Tom, and well thought out. The truth angers the right as you can see from the first comment.

So, when the economy improves, we get out of Afghanistan and the debt is on a downward trend, and we don't end up like Greece, are you going to admit that you were wrong?

I should point out that the Middle East was a dangerous disaster before. Democracy breaking out is good thing. Messy and violent as was our Revolution. Hopefully, the transitions are short lived.

TO: Read a newspaper, watch something besides MSNBC

Bush's policy weren't failing? The Middle East was not a dangerous disaster under the Bush administration? Afghanistan was not a mess under Bush? Wasn't the economy on the brink of sliding into a recession while Bush was running things?

I note with interest that, ten months after Obama took office, unemployment peaked at ten percent and has been going down ever since. It is now under eight percent.

Many economists believe that the continuation of the Bush stimulus by Obama saved the country from a full-up depression.

So Obama's policies are failing? How do you know? What is your evidence?

Tomi: Keep dreaming and keep ignoring how Obama's policies are failing. The Middle East is now a dangerous disaster, Afghanistan a mess, the economy is on the brink of sliding back into recession, and the debt has become truly staggering (Greece like, in terms of percent of GDP). Perhaps you should join us in the real world. Better yet, stay in fantasyland. It fits.
