Column: Neck pain, kidney stone no problem for YRMC docs
If it isn't one thing, you know, it's two. Or at least that's the case with my old bod health-wise the last couple of months. But with 82 years behind me, I don't really have any cause for complaint. After all, just like cars the parts tend to wear out and come in need of replacement or at least maintenance.

Celebrating 50 years of Medicare, Medicaid
It's easy to forget that before 1966, roughly half of all American seniors were uninsured, living in fear that the high cost of health care could plunge not only them, but their families, into poverty. Few of us remember that not long ago, far too many disabled people, families with children, pregnant women, and low-income working Americans were unable to afford the medical care they needed to stay healthy and productive.

Column: Bidding fond farewell to longtime friend
Our friendship spanned more than six decades, dating back to our high school days. His name: Jack Weldon, who passed away July 1 at age 81 in College Station, Texas. A phone call on the day following his death came from one of his four daughters, who asked if I might be able to attend his July 6 funeral service there and be among those speaking and sharing memories of his life. The answer on both accounts was a resounding "yes!" and it was off on a driving trip back to my home state the next day, with my daughter Shannon chauffeuring in our family jitney.

Column: Hotshots memorial service one to remember
It was a time for quiet reflection last Tuesday when my home church - the Prescott United Methodist - joined with many others in a service of remembrance for the 19 brave and selfless Granite Mountain Hotshots whose lives were taken as they strove to shield Yarnell from the capricious wildfire descending on the community in 2013.

Column: Why not peruse fun factoids during 'me time'?
"Uncle John's Ahh-Inspiring Bathroom Reader" is the title of a book that a fellow Lion passed over to me a while back during our club's twice-weekly paper recycling project.

Column: More fun with the dictionary and a pain in the neck
Uh-huh. "Dictionary duos" is the name of the mundane game that again reared its head - or rather "headings" - last week as I perused those "from-to" listings at the top of each page in the Third Edition of The American Heritage Dictionary.

Column: Getting married soon? Give Social Security your new name
Every year, June marks the beginning of two busy seasons: summer and "wedding season." With joyful expectation, many of us have already marked our calendars and started wrapping up our plans for the vacations, ceremonies and honeymoons.

Column: 'Dictionary duos' offer entertainment opportunities
Was browsing around the Old Sage Bookshop in the complex beneath Hotel St. Michael a while back with wife Pat and daughter Shannon when Shannon spotted and latched onto a hefty like-new American Heritage Dictionary that she proceeded to purchase for a bargain $4.95.

Hello, readers! You're in store for more lore of yore at the core relating to southeast Nebraska, of all places, spawned by my column of Tuesday before last that focused on quotes gleaned from the Table Rock Argus newspaper dated April 30, 1897.

Column: 'Operation Puppy Freedom' brings dog from Iraq to Prescott
Following is a true story from actual life focusing on a soldier. And puppy love. The soldier is Army Lt. Morgan Lerette, who is stationed in Iraq, whereas the puppy is an adorable fuzzball and native of Iraq who was born this past November and answers to the name Diyala.
