Letter: Consulate riot could have been thwarted

EDITOR:

Jim Swank asked in his letter printed Sept. 30 why we did not fire on Libya consulate rioters. He stated he believes Marines are always part of the security force. I agree with Swank's assumption that there might be something the president and the secretary of state do not want the American people to know.

U.S. officials underestimated the threat to our people even though American diplomats were warned by a Libyan security official days before Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens' visit that there were growing threats to Americans in Benghazi. There was an American military team assigned to establish security at the new embassy in Tripoli. This team was never instructed to protect the temporary embassy site at Benghazi. Instead, security in Benghazi was assigned to a small British firm called Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain farmed out security in Benghazi to local security forces. The Marines were not assigned to secure an extremely volatile area.

The first part of the attack was when Ambassador Stevens and an information management officer were killed. The small local security force was quickly neutralized and from there the attackers went to a second compound where an intense firefight occurred. That is where two former Navy SEALs, working as civilian security contractors, were killed.

There can be no doubt of the known security threat. The International Red Cross had suspended operation in eastern Libya in late June and the British government had shut down its consulate shortly thereafter because of security concerns. There is also no doubt the White House wants to downplay the underestimating of an intense security threat. This is evidenced by initial attempts to link the attack to a crude video that negatively portrayed the Prophet Muhammad. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice was quickly on numerous television shows denying any hint of terrorist activity.

The complicit and compliant mainstream media after initial reporting have kept further investigation low-key in an effort to protect the White House.

What is new there? If this had happened four years ago, our former president would have been excoriated by the same mainstream media.

Larry, Larry, Larry!
Stop the talking points!...we know this was another False Flag by the Obummer Administration!!! There never was an "Embassy" in Benghazi and the "new embassy in Tripoli" has been there for years! This is all a lie and you are pushing the "line" aren't you? Our State Dept. would never have used "Blue Mountain" or any other "security firm" if it was an Embassy!!! It was a Villa being used for clandestine operations!!!

There never was a riot. The State Department has now admitted that fact. The talk about a riot was just a cover up by the Obama Administration for their incompetence and incredibly bad decisions. Liars (Obama, Biden, Carney, Clinton, Rice) plain and simple, all of them.

I wonder if things in Libya would have been different if President Obama had attended more of his Intelligence briefings. Since we now know that the state department knew about the El Queda presence in Libya and the Ambasador's request for more protection, it seems logical that it might have come up if he had just attended his intelligence briefings and then, as a compentent and informed Presiden,t he could have acted to see that the protection was provided. It is unfortunate that President Obama has chosen to ditch 60% of the daily briefings that all his predecessors attended so faithfully. I guess Intelligence briefings seem insignifigant compared to the comforting curves on the couch of The View.

Hokas. I expected better of you. You are beginning to sound like the other Bush deniers and Obama haters. 9/11/01 occurred under Bush's watch not Clinton's. Clinton warned of Al Qaeda but Bush ignored it. Bush famously ignored the daily briefing saying Al Queda determined to attack.. But even so, no one called Bush unAmerican and unpatriotic. All of America joined together to support our country. When the consulate was attacked, Romney joined in the attack on America within hours. Even so, I don't think he was unpatriotic, just trying to use the deaths of 4 Americans to his political advantage. And what was Bush's response, Hokas? To attack the wrong country, for the wrong reason( WMD anyone?) yes his response was both swift and deadly . Also inappropriate, expensive and foolish. Then he prematurely declares victory and says he's not interested in bringing Osama to justice. And 12 years later we are still embroiled in those wars and the foreign policy that Bush pushed by invading those countries is largely responsible for the attacks on our embassies to this day.
And to Alan Whitney. The attack on America was a direct attack on us because of our foreign policy. I am not saying our policy was wrong, but it was because we had established a permanent airbase in Saudi Arabia. That is why most of the terrorists were Saudi, not Afghani, or Iraqi.
But even so, I don't think Bush was unAmerican or unpatriotic.

Article comment by: @ Tea Baggers ~ Embassy security not congress responsibility

YOU SAID: "...It's unfortunate republicans...cut the funds for security that the president ask for..."

I SAY: Stop.! Let's try some perspective and truth. In the first place it is not the responsibility of Congress to provide security plans to the Department of State. Nor is the job of Congress to rubber stamp and fund security officers the President and Secretary of State willy-nilly request. to support their global adventures.

More to point the President is required to live within his budget and disburse resources wisely. The Secretary of State, likewise, must proceed in line with known budgets and with funding available.

Obama and Clinton have, instead, gone around the world (mostly in the middle east) intervening and interfering in other country's governments and business. They were responsible for bloodshed in Libya and death of Kadafi. They took it upon themselves to fund Jihadists in Egypt, and now Syria with the predictable results of more deaths and more hatred towards the USA.

Nobody authorized Boom-Boom Obama and Combat Clinton to start bombing Libya, nor were they sanctioned to send Ambassadors into war zones without proper protection.

Yet, that is exactly what these two foolish and incompetent people did, and others paid the price.

Humming this tune of "Ryan voted to cut the budget for embassy security..." is pap and nonsense.

If a person decides they wish to be a scuba diver, jumps into deep water and drowns, it is no one's fault except their own. Trying to blame the guy's parents for for his death by not giving him money to buy scuba tanks is beyond ridiculous.

A clueless and arrogant Obama went charging into Libya without a grasp of the facts, and an equally misguided and incompetent Clinton (We came, we saw, he died...) should be a witness at the impeachment trial of the President.

Article comment by: Denial Is Not The Longest River In Egypt

M D, the policies of this administration, not complacency is the reason we have four dead patriots. In their zeal to reinforce their policy of, “Al Qaeda terrorism is no longer an issue since the death of Bin Laden,” marines were denied. If marines were present that day the results would have been different.

Therefore, politics are the reason they are dead not Al Qaeda. Terrorist are alive and well in the middle east and they are still attacking American targets. Denial is not the longest river in Egypt.

Of course the president and secretary of state are in another "cover-up" mode, especially with Obama's reputation for re-election. This administration doesn't care about our security, only what makes them look bad and that's sad. The truth will eventually surface as with the Fast & Furious cover-up. Too many secrets and the taxpayer's have a right to know. Maybe a cyberattack is what will take place instead. Go for the "juggler" and put our country in the dark. Obama needs to come clean about what is really happening and NOW.

@ M D:

If this administation was not complicit, than they were incompetent. Those are the choices we have. It is clear, warnings were given and went unheeded.

Yes. Let's go back to 9/11/01 (not 9/11/11). The Clinton administration ignored the threats posed by al Queda, even though the U.S. was attacked (the U.S.S. Cole, the 1993 World Trade Center bombing). The response from that administration? I hear crickets. After 9/11/01, the response from the Bush administration was swift, deadly and decisive, until liberals got involved.

Dear MD,

You compare the Libya attack to the attack on the World Trade Towers?

Really?

The attack on 9-11 was not a direct result of American Foreign policy.

The Libyan debacle was.

In 2001, the President was not specifically responsible for the security of the Twin Towers.

In 2012, the President WAS specifically responsible for the consulate in Benghazi.

Carer to re-think your hypothesis?

I've seen a lot of foreign policy boo boos in the past few administrations, and this is one of them. There's nothing partisan about it. Maybe all of our last few presidents should have been impeached. Being president, by nature, is an impeachable offense.

@Hokas.
There is no question that the death was tragic. To claim the administration is complicit is also tragic.
Let's return to Tuesday 9/11/11 to see how the opposing party should respond when America is attacked. I seem to remember we came together. As opposed to 4 deaths, there were 3000. And those attacks were inside our borders. Was that president blamed for those attacks? Could it have been politicized? The famous daily briefing claiming Al Quida determined to attack that was ignored could have been politicized, and was clearly a bumble. But no one claimed that he wasn't patriotic or was complicit.
This is no different. Hindsight is 20/20. To blame this administration and try to make political points in effect joining the enemy in attacking America is sickening.

And Tom, I didn't blame the attacks on the republicans in the house. If you retread my post I said they shouldn't be blamed in spite of the fact they reduced funding for embassy security. In hindsight, maybe they wouldn't have done that.
And Tom Von Deck. The Obamaphone is actually a Bushphone. The first free Bushphone program began in 2008 before Obama was sworn in. Don't let the facts get in the way of your hate.

Larry,
First it wasn't a riot, it was a terrorist attack.
It is a Consular office in Benghazi not an Embassy.
Marines were not assigned to guard either the Consular office or the Embassy in Tripoli.
After the terroist attack, Libian civilians found our Ambassador still breathing, pulled him out of the smoke filled room and then ran with him until they found a vehicle to transport him to a hospital, where he died of smoke inhalation. Photos of citizens doing this have been used to denigrate Libians as lawless and uncaring, dragging our Ambassador through the streets in protest.

The two former Navy SEALS were not security consultants for either the consulate or the Embassy.
They were in Libya on a different mission for the State Department and were at their headquarters a few blocks away.
When they heard gunfire, they ran towards the Consular offices to protect their fellow Americans.

Doing so, at the very least would blow their undercover mission. They did so anyway because that is what type of men they were.
These American Heros died trying to protect their fellow countrymen.
Our government did not adequately protect our interests or our personnel in Benghazi. Afterwards they tried to cover their mistakes up, blamig the attack on rioters protesting a video. This has been proven as false. They have been caught in their lies and are now trying to justify their ineptness.

Good analysis, Mr. Coffey.

To increase security or remove our ambassador from the embassy would have been contrary to the Obama narrative. Obama, together with his friends in the mainstream media, would have the American people believe that after his visits and charming speeches to the people of the middle east and that "he" killed Osama bin Laden, that democracy, freedom, liberty, peace and light have broken out all over the region. Obama's narrative is that the war on terror is over and, that due to his policies, civil society is well established in the region. Nothing could be further from the truth. The people of the middle east are obviously not charmed as easily as some Americans. He threw Hillary Clinton (I'm not defending Secretary Clinton) and the national security establishment under the bus to perpetuate this lie. Statements made by Joe Biden in the last debate that, "we didn't know," leads to two conclusions: either this administration is utterly incompetent or they are liars.

Had this occurred under the Bush administration the mainstream media (and liberals in general) would be calling for someone's head.

Larry: You should watch the news. The State Department now admits (just before they were going under oath at the hearings) THERE WAS NO RIOT. There was a terrorist attack. Barack, Hilliary, Susan Rice and others simply lied about it repeatedly.
PS: M D: It appears you suscribe to the Obama, Clinton, Rice view on the importance of simple honesty. Did you forget to tell us it was really Bush's fault?
Blaming the murders on the Republicans in the House is ridiculous. Talk about playing politics.....

Article comment by: @ Tom Von Deck ~ Cause of riots

Yes, that riot causing "police violence" that happens when law enforcment tries to keep rioters from harming others, burning down buildings, destroying property, and such.

Or, violence caused by taking away that free Obamaphone, and cutting welfare from those too lazy to work and too entitled to be self supporting.

I say bring the riots, because I am tired of being threatened by perpetual losers boasting about all the bad and violent things they are going to do if they ain't paid. Bring it.

Article comment by: @ MD ~ Shameful is a dead ambassador...

...who was begging for help, and ignored.

MD you and the rest of the clueless Obamanauts can try to spin this all you want, or outright lie just as your clueless messiah is doing, but the simple fact remains that Obama sent our ambassador into harm's way, without protection.

Then, when it came out Obama and Clinton had prior knowledge of the danger, but ignored it. When information started getting out and things got sticky, and it became clear that not only did Obama / Clinton foolishly abandoned the embassy staff, then callously sent form letters to the family of unarmed dead American citizens (killed due to Obama's incompetence), but set about lying repeatedly over the fiasco to boot.

This event alone, and outrageous attempt at cover-up after the fact, should be enough to indict Hillary Clinton and impeach Barack Obama.

Just as crimes committed by Eric Holder and Obama in the Fast & Furious fiasco should be grounds for their joint removal.

Just as the BLS lying about unemployment figures should be sufficient for the mass firing of government workers in that department.

Now, MD and the rest of the lefy loons want to talk about somehow US Congress and Paul Ryan voting against funding a boondoggle of a security plan as the cause of the burned embassy.!! A plan that called for a UK company to hire local Libyans as security guards to an otherwise unguarded and unprotected consulate.?

Get real. That is like jumping off a cliff, breaking a leg, and complaining that it is your mom's fault because she would not buy a big enough umbrella to slow your fall.

Bad times came with Obama, bad times will leave with Obama.
