Letter: Vocal Prescott liberals should expect blowback

EDITOR:

The number of whiners in Prescott appears to be growing. The latest is Karen Grubb, who complains her neighbor won't talk to her because of a political disagreement. I assume none of these people have read Emily Post. We don't talk about religion and politics in polite society. If one does, they should expect heated discussion, a possible beat-down or, in Karen's case, a neighbor who stops talking. Rule of thumb: Don't discuss politics with strangers or neighbors.

Now Karen and her merry band have one thing in common: They like our president and expect everyone to respect and like him simply because he is the president. I submit these same people did not respect or like the last president. That, however, is a story for another time. I also suspect they drop down in front of their computers and have the White House talking points downloaded in their heads through a USB port.

This is Prescott, a conservative town in which the lion's share of people believe in a small, weak central government, do not support national healthcare, don't want the social network expanded and don't support gun control. We are not going to change or get behind a president who has ideas contrary to our beliefs. We will, however, continue to pay our taxes and abide by the laws of the country.

You and your merry band can take your phony indignation and sell it to MSNBC.

Michael Oskins

Article comment by: Obama's Great Scam

Obama targeted a large group of people which he could use to gain power, convincing them they have an enemy holding them back. Obama then targeted another group of people who he demonized as the enemy of those down trodden people. Next Obama steps in as the savior of the group of people he is using to gain power.

It is a scam used often by con-artists. Con-artists play on the individuals greed to get them to do as he wishes. Obama just conned a lot of greedy, lazy people who want things but are not interested in working for things to vote for him.

The only problems we the people have has generally been caused by democrats in charge over the past 12 years. Democrats created this situation starting back when they had total control of the house and senate, while all the time fighting and keeping President Bush from stopping their insanity. Democrats created the housing problems we have not President Bush.

No body is holding anyone back from prosperity. Obama convinced you it was true. The individual is the only one responsible for holding himself back.

Obama's great scam worked, too many Americans fell for it, and now we are all in trouble because of lazy, greedy people with their had out.

Rich people and business is not the problem! They are the ones paying you weekly with pay checks! If you let Obama take their money away you may not have a pay check! You will be laid off, standing with your hand out, asking Obama to help you. Obama just ACED you out of your good paying job and you still don't get it.

If I have to explain it to you, you still wouldn't understand! People need to educated themselves!

libertarians don't legislate morality my friend nor do we proscribe it.

Liubertarianism does't guarantee sucess, it's not a cook book for happiness. It's just the freedom to try it your way.

Mr. obama has ruined this country.

Just a few results of our weak president:
The taliban has re-formed in Africa.
N. Korea has advanced in nuclear weapontry.
America digs further into debt and has a motivational speaker of a president blowing smoke up our butt!

@ A Thought

Your post, and the news item to which it refers, has nothing to do with President Obama and everything to do with a Colorado high school principal who made a huge mistake and today took steps to correct it.

Welcome back to Obama's America.

Funny how you Cons can be. I recall any disagreement by us with Bush Ploicy always ended with us being UNAMEICAN. So the old fart cons insist on the party platform without thinking about them being part of the problem they spout off about. Just turn in your Social Security card and Medicare card and give back that pension so your old company can stay afloat. I like the way you think. You and Rubio make a lot of cents.

@Jim Beam-By the way, the whole country voted for a Republican for President, TWICE, you need to rethink. By 2016, our country will desperately need a change.

I agree with the general tone of your contribution.

However, I find it interesting that you single out liberals as the ones perpetuating violence (your words) be enacting restrictive legislation.

Surely the libertarian standpoint isn't anarchy, nor does is absolve the right from their incessant need to legislate morality?

Article comment by: Emily Post!!!

This may come as a surprise to Mr. Oskins, but Emily Post (born in 1872 during Grant's first term) died Sept. 25, 1960 (Eisenhower). I know that to Michael it seems like only yesterday that he was reading her column and book. How time flies!

What an adorable and well-mannered child/young man Michael must have been!

What happened?

Discussion of politics has it's place.

It's productive and necessary to have ideological discussions, but only when they are approached with an intellectual curiosity and the desire to listen as much as to shout at others this is particularly true when it is so easy for the subjective shrillers to shout down the objective orators. Guess they get their emotional victory, but ultimately accomplish nothing but fleeting sanctimonious pleasure from it.

Fittingly, the vast majority of letters to this paper and ensuing comments are hardly born of any desire to actually communicate with others merely communicate at them. And in such an immature, petulant manner. I expect more of 10 year olds yet presumably we are all adults.

Grow up, shut up, and listen. You might learn something. Of course, that highly dependent on whether the one talking is going to be rational and informed. Remember, if they aren't your yelling and stomping your feet back at them will do nothing to advance your ideas. Better to smile, wave, and go about your day because they were never interested in an adult discussion in the first place.

It's healthy to challenge your own beliefs. Sadly, sloth and fear often prevents us from doing so.

Peace.

Prescott, I believe Michael Oskins just dared/threatened you a "beat down" for expressing your opinion. Which is unfortunate. Not as unfortunate as the Newspaper that publishes his threat(much less condones it)..... but never the less... pretty sad.

As a libertarian I'm often on the outside of these lib vs. con arguments. Obama vs. Romney was a non-competition for me because I couldn't find a SINGLE major policy difference between them. Either way we get more government, more wars, more taxes, less freedom and less value in our economy. Their differences lay primarily in skin color.

However in Prescott the truth is easier to see. We have a historical base interested in keeping certain things unchanged and an influx of people who want to change everything. The blowback case is well made. Unable to convince and persuade, "liberals" seek to use the power of state violence to get their way. Because that's what inventing laws and criminalizing what was perfectly legal is: VIOLENCE. People with guns come to enforce your ways upon others. That is violence, that is oppression no matter if you put the stamp of legality on it.

Perhaps Emily Post had a point though and I wonder if some of us can't exert a bit more restraint in keeping things on this board as civil as we are in real life around town. This board sounds more like a big city board sometimes with all the bashing. But I claim no superiority, I can lash out at them too sometimes.

It just happens that for me, "them" switches sides from the partisan perspective. To libertarians most of you are locked into perpetuating a two party system that's partnered up on liquidating America.

I voted Republican since Gerald Ford. I voted for Bush four times - twice for Governor when I lived in Texas and twice for president. Not anymore. I voted for President Obama twice and am looking forward to voting for Hillary or Biden or whoever the Dems run. For me, as a woman, it's all about the social issues. The deficit will take care of itself, I want my social security, and the Republican Party will fade away when all the racist white old men and their frightened wives die from old age. Maybe then, the real conservative values of self reliance will become important again.

Incredible. The premise of this letter is that since it is apparently 1955 and Prescott is part of the pre-civil rights South, one should not expect to be allowed to voice opinions without the possibility of a "beat down". That is an actual quote from the letter.

Is this seriously the point we have come to? What an embarrassment to America, which was founded on the idea that people of different beliefs could live together without one group oppressing the others.

The local hate club likes to talk about the founding fathers, but it is actually the Confederacy that they draw their values from.

I am Rebuplican but voted Democrat in this last election! I am in that 47% that Romney didn't care about! I have worked since I was nine until I was 53! I am 55 now! Retired USAF disabled vet!! I am also a Arizona native but am embarrassed to say so because of the moronic government in this state! If I had the opportunity I would move back to Colorado!! I wouldn't even waste my time looking in my rear-view mirror as I crossed over the state line!! I hope someday this state will get a half way decent Gov!I remember back when I was twelve the state government was horrible here and it's never improved!! I also hope all of the Republicans ,Tea Party will take their blinders off and wake up and join the 21st century and leave the mid 20th century behind them but they will probably take their same attitudes to the grave with them!

Even though I think the writer of this letter went a little too far in just spewing hate at the other side I do agree with his premise. The writer is correct in stating that Yavapai County is very conservative and will stay that way for the foreseeable future. many of the Democrats that are here are transplants from states like California. The question to them is, why escape such a progressive haven? Were the taxes too high? Didn't like get an IOU in the mail when you filed your tax returns? If you are leaving somewhere due to the fact that the policies are too stringent don't come here and try to institute them in a place that will always reject those type of invasive laws. And for the people who think they are turning Yavapai County blue all you have to do is look at the election results. Romney got 5,00 more votes in Yavapai County than McCain did. Obama lost close to 5,000 votes in our county between 2008 and 2012. Isn't that going the wrong direction if you are truly going to change the political landscape around here? for those of you that are pulling the race card looks like you really have no other argument. There is nothing in this article about race and once minorities start having more prosperity under Obama than they did under Bush then you can call us all racits. Until then try actually making a valid point.
