Letter: You can't make up God's characteristics

In Mary Bradley's letter to the editor ("Intolerance is not cool in 2012," Oct. 24), she states that a quote from a previous writer - "homosexuals are an abomination" - is a pathetic comment on his religious intolerance. I would like to remind her that this is a direct quote from Leviticus 18:22 and reflection of God's intolerance of human sin rather than just one reader's righteous opinion.

Mary further states, "My God accepts all people and judges them by the good they do while they are in this world." This is the common age-old practice of making up your own God and attributing the characteristics you'd like to see Him have, and it is called idolatry. And the reference to "good deeds" indicates a belief you can earn your way to heaven when the only way is through repentance and turning from sin.

It really doesn't matter whether it is 2012 or 1712, because the word of truth is the rock of ages which does not waver or change with cultural trends.

Check this out re: "Kill the Gays":

Maybe you missed it all because you "googled" rather than "Googled"?

You have many articles to read.

Why did Romney ban automatic weapons when they have been heavily regulated by federal law since the 20's, and unavailable to the general public?

Was there an issue with the use of legal automatic weapons in MA, or was it merely political pandering?

Hi Shano...

Could you provide documentation or reference to this alleged "Kill The Gays" Bill? I just find it a little ridiculous. I googled it, nothing that looks legitimate actually came up. Could you provide the actual title of the bill please? I am interested reading it. Totally serious.

It's kinda like when some yahoo said Mitt Romney banned guns in MA. I found out he actually banned AUTOMATIC GUNS and not personal firearms or semiautmatic weapons. I just like to read things for myself instead of forming opinions from rhetoric. Thats what separates the educated and informed even thinkers from the lynch mobs :0)

Thank you!

There is a saying among theologians that, "If horses had gods, they'd look like a horse." Did God make man in His image or did man make God in his image?

There is an old Hebrew proverb that says, "We don't see the world as it is, we see it as we are." Nowhere is that more true than in religion. If there was only one 'Truth' then why are there well over 100 churches in the area all purporting to speak for God? Why not only one? Why do people 'shop' for churches? It's because they go to a church where they can take their own beliefs, biases and prejudices and have them confirmed by like minded 'believers' and ministers. They can quote selected verses like choosing between jello and brownies in a cafeteria line, all the while missing the bigger picture of what Jesus taught and what religion should and could be. One church in town was started by people leaving another church because of a dispute over the color of the choir robes. Fashion trumps faith? People go to churches to hear what they want, not to have their beliefs challenged. Thus they continue to see the world as they are and just use the Bible as their rationalization.

Jesus told us not to judge, lest we be judged in equal and like manner. So if you write a letter here is that narrow minded, willfully ignorant and bigoted the readers are going to judge you to be a narrow minded, ignorant bigot no matter how many verses you can quote. Just consider it Biblical infallibility.

A final thought. Since virtually every religion has a version of the Golden Rule, some long before Christianity, is the Golden Rule true because it's in the Bible or is it in the Bible because it's true? I guess it depends on how you see the world.

@Fellow Atheist-The Bible & Christianity is untrue and a proven fact? Really. Who says, you, and atheist. After two thousand years you think all those generations until now have been wrong because you said so? Scientists are atheists, so let it go at that. Man was created in God's image and I don't think he was of another species. You know nothing of evolution or the Bible, that's a fact!

Article comment by: God and Santa Are Riding In the Same Slippery Sled

If you believe that Leviticus 18:22 is any more believable when compared to talking snakes, floating, omnipotent, omniscient, supernatural deities, devils with poking sticks in the furnace of Hell. If you think that there are angels with big white wings. If you believe all these things with out a shred of evidence, then way deep down in your brainwashed mind you must realize that all this is as silly as Santa Claus. So if you still believe in Santa, then you should believe that Leviticus 18:22 is a God-induced law otherwise it is nothing but a bit of twisted, mean spirited, ancient thinking by people who also believed that the Earth was flat! If this type of thinking is the basis of belief of modern Christian folks and Literal Christianity. no wonder that the ranks of you non-critically thinking people are dwindling* you will some day be placed within the same category as those who believe that Planet Earth is flat.

Study the history of all religions and you will discover that man created gods, or god, to fulfill a normal human need. It's human nature All civilizations, primitive or sophisticated, had manufactured gods, or a single god in order to explain reality. All of them. It was not the other way around.

The Rev : His faith happens to cause harm to others. He is exactly like the Taliban or the government of Uganda. The Christian right wing of our Congress went over to Uganda to teach them to hate gay people. They passed the infamous 'Kill the Gays' bill. Just because your writer is not calling for stoning or jailing- he really wants to go back to the days where Oscar Wilde- a brilliant man- could be castigated and jailed for his sexual preferences. Tell me how his faith is any different than the radical Muslims? To me it is exactly the same hate-filled radical intolerance for others.

There are lots of laws in the bible that none obeys, does that make it less sinfull ? Animal sacrifices were the only way to symbolically wash our selves fre of the sin and repent note symbolically. Jesus was the grand sacrifice he sacrificed himself for our sins. Thus since his death animal sacrifices are no longer needed but we must pray through him to get to the father. Most of the old laws in the old testament no longer applied after jesus came and died. Stoning was frequent before then but remember when jesus saved mary magdalene bu saying" he who is without sin must cast the first stone" none of them were without sin. So no matter what anyone does whether right or wrong we are not worthy of judging them, that is left for god. Maybe if you all read the bible you would have a better understanding of it.

Always interesting when Atheists point at Christians claiming intolerance. By what Denis has written he seeks to clarify how some Christians view homosexuality. He makes no calls for stoning, imprisonment or general penalty of those his faith finds offensive. He is being true to his faith.

To: Denis

As several people have pointed out, which biblical "law" do you claim to be enforceable - not eating pork, stoning adulterers, animal sacrifice, death for worshipping Baal? You pick out one thing and lecture us about it, but I will bet that you have never killed one of your children for mouthing off.

The bible was written and rewritten over a period of several hundred years. There were conferences to decide which books to include and which to leave out. Then there were conferences to decide what was correct in the bible and what was not. And, after many attempts to decide what was the "real" bible, we have the King James, the New American Standard, and the Catholic bible, just to name a few. There are more, e.g., the Ethiopean bible.

The bible is an interesting collection of myths, each of them representative of the beliefs of their time and not at all timeless.

Why do you care if there are homosexuals? Do their practices do you any harm? There are homosexual animals, ranging from pigeons to apes. Do they do you any harm?

Those who claim that the bible is the timeless word of god, are very selective about what you pick out. As I said earlier, you are not killing your children for mouthing off, but that's in there, that is in the bible which is the timeless and inerrant word of god so why are you not following up on it?

There is no god and the bible is a collection of manmade myths just as are the golden tablets that Joseph Smith "found" and then lost.

It's a lot easier to be obsessed with the perceived weaknesses of others than it is to learn how to love one another. Morality is about how we treat each other. It's not about eating pork chops and lobster (both warrant the death penalty according to Leviticus) or having the wrong bedroom practices. If you do not want gays to be "in your face", stop peaking into their bedrooms in the first place.

The Easter Bunny isn't real, and neither is Santa Claus, The Samsquantch is though. Next on fairy tale hour.

I agree with the other Atheist on here. How horrible to see people like Denis thinking the way he does. How intolerant, and untrue. The bible and Christianity is untrue. It's a proven fact. Look at Evolution, it's not really even a theory any more, but you Christians can't accept science. This letter really ruins my day. Why can't anyone be a free thinker and come up with their own beliefs instead of listening to some old book with no factual basis.

Robert Jeffress, a Texas megachurch pastor, said that President Obama's re-election victory would lead to the rise of the Antichrist, the Christian Post reports.

Said Jeffress: "I want you to hear me tonight, I am not saying that President Obama is the Antichrist, I am not saying that at all. One reason I know he's not the Antichrist is the Antichrist is going to have much higher poll numbers when he comes."

He added: "But what I am saying is this: the course he is choosing to lead our nation is paving the way for the future reign of the Antichrist."

"because the word of truth is the rock of ages"
Truth? No. Your opinion is noted, Mr. Weber, now here's a dose of mine.
This sounds exactly like cult-speak from a brainwashed member of the flock to me. Antiquated phrases crafted to placate the feeble minded.
I believe this mutual idolatry contest means very little to us rational, thinking humans who have no desire to create our own personal Santa Claus. Please refrain from trying to hide your own personal intolerance behind religion. Many of us aren't buying it. You will be called out and held accountable when you step over the line of civility.
This is not the bronze-age anymore. Try and keep up. Homosexuality isn't hurting you in any way personally unless you are in the closet, and then, that is purely your 'cross' to bear.
Maybe you people could wake up and learn to keep your religion and intolerance to yourselves, just as you would ask homosexuals to keep their 'sin' to themselves. Seems a fair trade to me.

Thank you, Denis, for boldly proclaiming the truth about God. I'm sure there will be many comments here from folks like honky brujo that are hate-filled, intolerant, and insulting.

Be confident in the fact that you and other Christians know the truth. Truth is hated by the world. We are told that we will be hated and persecuted for believing in the true God and turning from sin.

Mary Bradley has chosen to be deceived by Satan and twisted the words of Jesus to fit her own desires.

Thank you for pointing out her transgressions and may she think on the truth you have presented.
