Letter: Keep the political, bad jokes out of rodeo performance

EDITOR:

I attended the rodeo on July 1, and I was appalled at the dialogue between the announcer and the rodeo clown. Countless political jokes and remarks, with a blatant Republican bent, were made. Our President was ridiculed in many ways.

Voicing your political opinions over a loudspeaker to rodeo fans is unacceptable. I also found many of the jokes bordering on raunchy as there were many children in attendance. I always considered the rodeo to be a great family venue but thing have definitely changed. I have attended many rodeos but I can assure you this was my last. Prescott deserves better than this.

Angela: Obama deserves all the ridicule he gets. Actually, it starting to appear that what he deserves is to be impeached.
PS: We won't miss you at the rodeo.

I am a proud Democrat and also a big fan of the Rodeo and PBR. I do cringe when the announcer brings politics into a great entertainment venue like this. I don't care if the President is a Republican or a Democrat but he is to be respected. Period. Yes you can say what you want. No doubt about it. The thing is people in the Rodeo and PBR seem to think only Republicans love this sport. I would just think as a business that wants to expand and show more people how great it is they would want to make more people feel included not excluded. Food for thought.

It's called freedom of speech!

Not freedom of speech, except on government property. That would be Communism, now wouldn't it.

Don't folks go to the rodeo to get away from politics?

Y'all just need to find an announcer with an imagination.

Isn't it against the law to be President of America and not be a legal citizen? It should be! If it is against the law then I say, Obama should be placed under arrest, and deported.

@ DOUBLE EDGED SWORD?
No, no, no. It's not that it is politically correct when the left does it. It's that it is FUNNY. The right never seems to find it funny because they seem to lack a SENSE OF HUMOR. Especially self-deprecating humor. The fact that the right takes itself so seriously is always a source for amusement.
Humor isn't supposed to be serious business. Republican humor is unusually terrible because: A. The satire is so adolescent B. It is usually mean-spirited C. There's no imagination and D. It tends to cater only to the lowest common denominator.
The left has Letterman, Leno, The Daily Show and Colbert. The right has what, Blue Collar TV & Hee Haw?
The difference has always been TALENT. You should probably stay in your own wheelhouse, Repubs.

PLEASE POST THIS AS ANONYMOUS

Ms. Lawson’s July 23, 2012 letter on Rodeo festivities raises issues that the City of Prescott might wish to address. Political commentary and religious invocations, or other parochial monologues during Rodeo festivities may or may not be legally permissible let alone in good taste.
The Rodeo is held on City property, in a public venue, where political, religious or other private views seem out of place – to say the least. Of course, Rodeo organizers might be able to hide behind the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. That option, however, should be available to any religion or political party wanting to use the Rodeo microphone to express its views.
Nevertheless, the Rodeo may be deemed a private event, despite the fact that it charges admission on public property. Those of us who disagree with its “entertainments” must then find other forms of amusement.

Isn't a rodeo really just an acceptable form of animal cruelty? And yet you people are getting your panties bunched over some political jokes. Talk about having your priorities misplaced...

@really,
This "pointless sport" is held in madison square garden in new your, the silver dome in pontiac michigan and the cow palace in san francisco. Even the gay community trys to immitate rodeo....You sir are a lier, if you truely did not care what others did with their time or money you would not find it nessessary to waste your time belittling others who do not agree with you, or share your views on entertainment....One would think that with the president of your choice, greatly expanded entitlements, and the new and improved health care system, you would be a happier person......I prefer hanging out with the likes of "hay seeds" over pompous liberals any day.

I love the rodeo. I think Obama Jokes, Bush Jokes, all political jokes are funny. I went to the Calgary Stampede. That province in Canada is left leaning and therefore most of the attendees would fit into what we consider the Democrat side of the equation. I have attended several Nascar events. I am not a fan of cars making huge numbers of left hand turns over and and over again. When I was in Talledega which is in a mostly Democratic section of the country, they told Bush jokes. They were pretty funny. When I was in Darlington, a mostly Republican area I would have to guess most of the fans were Republican. They told Bush jokes and they were pretty funny. This was of course Bush 1. I think most people on here need to get over themselves just a bit.

LOL You are always so quick to brand someone as a racist. With your statement, "In the mean time the rest of us field hands will be plotting how to overthrow them and gain our FREEDOM." I brand you as one who commits treason. BTW what is mean time? Something that has no discipline?

Behold, ladies and gentlemen, the comments by white warlock. There you see in stark clarity the mindless, hysterical ranting of your typical liberal. Look at the anger and hostility in their words. Look also at the total lack of substance, logic or rational expression.

The comments by "really." are quite similar in nature. Anger, hostility and every effort to belittle and besmirge those with differing interests and points of view. Niether of these two pillars of the left have anything of actual value to say.

Nasty, mean, childish, petty, completely INtolerant. These are the liberals who insist that Barack Obama deserves another term. Obama himself encourages and embraces the tactics employed by his minions like warlock and really.

Seems it's always politically correct when the Democrats or liberal comedians and stations make jokes about the Republicans! Seems a bit hypocritical to me. No one is forcing anyone to go to sports events. Football games all have patriotic songs. I do believe the liberals have contributed more than enough of their satire.

I agreed all bad jokes should not be allowed, what good does it do. The rodeo is put on by volunteers every year. There is a few places where clubs gets a certain amount for helping out. No one is paid there. For clubs to get $250 they have to work all 8 performances. You would be surprised who all volunteer every year and do not show up. You count on them and they let you down because it is a lot of hard work. I bet they had 60 to 100 peoples who put in applications to work and never show up to help out, why put them out if you are not going to do it.

The only thing that horses are good for is betting on or eating. Imagine grown men making a living riding horses, and/or tortured bulls, what an anacronism. It makes as much sense as giving all the wealth of this Country to 1% and waiting for them to slop something off their tray for the other 99%. You Tea Pots help out those poor Rich people every chance you get, maybe they will let you live in the Main House with their other pets. In the mean time the rest of us field hands will be plotting how to overthrow them and gain our FREEDOM.

I never understood the attraction, nor why anyone in their right mind would pay good money to attend a rodeo. I've lived here 8 years, and have never had any interest. Honestly, I think I would rather watch weeds grow.
I don't care how people wanna spend their money, but I have better things to do with my time than sit around with a bunch of hayseeds watching grown men trying to compensate for something they are obviously lacking. I put bullfighters and NASCAR watchers in the same category. The sports republicans seem to support sure seem lame, don't they?
Is it manly to ride a bull? Nope, I sure don't think so - stupid is more like it. Why not just eliminate the bulls, wrap each other in burlap sacks and beat each other with clubs like cavemen? Last one standing wins. Now, *that* I might watch!
The wannabe-cowboy lifestyle is silly. Most of them have completely fabricated personas and have probably never rode a horse or stepped foot on a ranch in their lives. Many are simply little girls and boys that refuse to grow up. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.
Real men support wives and families. The same is reciprocal for real women.
So, I don't go.
Which brings me to this letter: Angela, you're watching a pointless rural 'sport,' in one of the reddest counties in one of the reddest states in the country, and you're complaining about a few Obama jokes? Please... You're outrage is totally preposterous.
Why did you even attend? Did you really believe they would be having craft fairs serving wine and cheese?
I would guess it's more like Budweiser and some sort of meat on a stick. Not exactly Obama territory.

Who cares about a joke concerning a non-American who weaseled his way into becoming the President of this great country. It has been proven that his birth certificate has been forged.

It seems that the only ones who would vote him in again would be non-American's. Why else would he try to secure votes from those living in this country illegally.

This President is a joke and so is anyone who votes for him.

Don't forget, this is a President who wants our military men and women to pay for their war time wounds for protecting us and yes even protecting Obama. Although Obama is all in favor of paying for health care for those coming to our country illegally. I guess it's only right for Obama to think this way since he is here Illegally.

It appears as though the democrats and those on the left can dish it out but they can't take it when it turns back on them. Didn't your parents teach you about this. If you don't like it then don't to it to others. Remember the Golden Rule. Do on to others as you would have other do onto you. Now you get what you deserve. People are doing unto you as you have done unto to others. So enjoy!
