Letter: Fox News viewers are well-informed

EDITOR:

I am responding to David Raimondo's letter regarding Fairleigh Dickinson's survey that showed Fox News viewers as being somewhat less well informed than those watching competing news outlets.

In investigating this survey, I first located the questions, and although I never attended FD or any other university, I answered all the questions correctly without even breaking a sweat. According to the university, the first survey was conducted solely within New Jersey, and then because the results were so hotly contested, they claim they then conducted a nationwide survey. FD is of course liberal institution, not as bad as say Sarah Lawrence, or our own Prescott College, but nevertheless, not exactly Hillsdale College. As a matter of fact, they are not even listed among New Jersey's Top 15 universities according to About.Com, who is owned by the NY Times. I have a sneaky suspicion that FD carefully selected their respondents and skillfully skewed the results with the deliberate intention of trying to show Fox News viewers to be inferior to those with a more liberal view.

I have countless family and friends who get their news almost exclusively from Fox, and I guarantee you that they would not have missed any of those questions. I personally get 99 percent of my news from Fox and the Wall Street Journal, and of course the Courier, but do occasionally sneak over to see if the mainstream channels, or their cable affiliates have anything worthwhile to say. PBS is okay, but you would be hard pressed to find a conservative working there - just ask liberal Juan Williams about that.

Let me assure you that conservatives who watch Fox News have caller ID, or the basic sense to never answer an unknown phone number, and definitely do not do phone surveys. Fox News viewers are achievers who do not have time for such nonsense. Overall, you will find us to be the most well-informed group in the nation and a mighty force to contend with come November.

Article comment by: Contempt of congress, let me tell you about this sheriff

Just spent the last 1/2 hour watching FOX, hoped to learn something about the health care issue that only yesterday it stressed was the most important issue of the day. Not one or two, but four talking heads informed me that if Oliver Stone made a movie about Eric Holder, Martin Sheen would play one of the roles.
Yes Mr. Sanborn, I took your advice, took this puppy for a test drive, now if you've got any cash, I'd like to invite you to a friendly night of cards.

You are kidding....aren't you? Fox News viewers believe what they are TOLD to believe. They would make excellent early 20th century German citizens.

Article comment by: not a fox viewer

Fox viewers are misinformed because fox news casters are so used to blabbling the same old conserviatives lies they can't even get a major news event right- The SC upheld the individual mandate in "obamacare" and fox reported this morning that the SC didn't uphold that provision. Then they tried to make a lame excuse of how complicated the decision was. Not buying it. They just read the first few pages of the decision and lost their mins when they read the it couldn't be upheld under the commerce clause. Apparnetly they read no furthre. We really can't blame the fox viewers for being the most uninformed people in the US, they are being brainwashed by lies and misinformaiton.

The thing I find so funny, is why would anyone spend the the time defending a television show buy writing to a newspaper? It's not like Fox is ever gonna care what's written in the DC.
Get real, five million different ways to stay informed about what matters the most to a person, ya really think people are using cable news to be informed about the things they care about most?

Article comment by: The Courier has probably won more journaism awards than FOX

The Daily Courier is a news outlet that contributes real value to the community. Fox News is not a credible news outlet, but rather, is a "spin" machine for the RNC. Read this to see why.

Article comment by: Fox knows it does not present news. Here's how you can tell

Fox News is not news. It merely provides opinion and info-tainment that reinforces the right wing viewpoint. It's tagline of being "Fair and Balanced" is a marketing ploy to make you think that you're getting news. But don't take my word for it. Look at the thousands of awards for professionalism, ethics and journalistic integrety that have been awarded in the 25+ years since Rupert Murdock created this fake news outlet. The Fox New Network has failed to earn one single award. NOT A SINGLE ONE. Google it. Go ahead, call it a conspiracy. Those of us who know how to consume and interpret news will continue to laugh at letters like this.

Article comment by: Fox News Lies

This is the spin and lies you get when you watch Fox News. This video clip shows Hannity deceptively omitting the rest of the Presidents interview. Newshounds exposes Fox News as to who and what they really are, a Republican Propaganda Machine.

More deceptions from this loosely called news feed. Fox News went 24 hours never explaining to its audience that the Chevy Volt layoffs were for 6 weeks only. All other news organizations did indicate the time frame. Fox News spun it so good for one day, you would tend to believe that the Volt was out of production permanently. The 3 Stooges at Fox & Friends (Romper Room had more integrity and truth than these three children) were rolling around on the floor with glee cheering more bad news for these unemployed Americans. Fox News was outraged, pushing their mostly uneducated Fox Watchers up to that famous fever Pitchfork and Torches STORM THE BASTILLE audience moment.... as usual. Once again through false reporting they attempted to put the blame on the President for another alternative energy failure.

Republicans love bad news for America and gloom and doom Fox News milked this falsehood for one day. The Chevy Volt workers? They went back to work in 5 weeks.

Let's remember that the two losers were Fox and MSNBC. We can't base our opinions of the study on the supposed liberal views of its designers. Their conclusion is that the more partisan networks scored lower. We actually need to look at the methodology and exactly how the study was set up. I do think the number of questions was quite small. I also think that if your "news" is all from Maddow and Hannity, you're really not getting much "news". The real news programs on cable news are extremely shallow all around. The formatting just doesn't really help create an informed citizenry. They never provide enough context for anyone to understand what's going on in the world.

Try Googling "Lies From Fox News" and then "Lies From NPR". Interesting results. Why would we want to listen to a publicly traded news channel that Rupert Murdoch & family control? Good grief.

The amazing irony here is how the babbling liberals are the ones who get their "news" from slanted sources and who don't bother to even be informed about the issue (Fox News) that they spew about. Most of the babblers making comments here today have spent very little, if any, real time evaluating what's actually shown on Fox News. They come here and attempt to promote the fraud that they are the informed, learned, intellectual ones. What a freaking joke. They look ridiculous and don't even know it. Useful idiots in the classic sense.

What a joke to read this letter from Everett. Fox does not pretend NOT to be a political station. Wallace was on a interview and said Fox tries to offset MSNBS for their slanted views. That says it all. He was saying Fox slants views to offset MSNBC. I do not get MSNBC but I do scan Fox occasionally
In a political "news" Fox, the truth is the first to die. We have 2 hate talk "political" station in town. The truth is murdered every day, 365 days of the year. Where are the moderate republicans?? America needs you along with moderate democrats.

I find Fox News to be the most unbiased of the TV newtworks. they have both conservative and liberals participating in their opinions, not so with the other left-wing stations. I also find that MSNBC has the most racial and disgusting newspeople!

Article comment by: Grass Roots

I used to watch MSNBC but haven't turned it on since Obama was elected. Their rants against anyone who didn't agree with the radicals on the station turned me off. No trace of fairness.

CNN is in the toilet right now - lowest ratings in 20 years. No trace of fairness.

Fox is still #1. It's #1 because it attracts people from all over the political spectrum. There's something for everyone. If you ask me they can take that horrific excuse for a Fox "fair and balanced" character, Bob Beckel, and can him today and it won't be too soon. But - we have to take the bad with the rest rather than ALL BAD.

There's nowhere else to go but Fox if you want to see all aspects of politics in the US and the world.

In the information age, anyone that is not getting their news from multiple sources is not well informed. All the modern news agencies (including FOX, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, etc.) are biased in one way or another.

Attention all liberals, (and collectivists) who responded to this letter from Mr. Sanborn: As an informed individual who can make up his own mind,(with or without insults and innuendos from those who would disagree), I grew up and was educated in Massachusetts. I got to see first hand what onesided leftist policies, totally left wing media and government can do to a state, and it ain't pretty. As far as balance, compared with MSNBC, NBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, and NPR, I'll take Fox News any day of the week! It's amazing the way those on the far out left completely lose any civility or decency with those who sincerely have a different view point or opinion. Calling those you disagree with stupid, uneducated or uninformed will get you nowhere folks.

Mr Bowden, we are upset because one network took a case to federal court, and won, arguing for its right to lie and call it news. We all know which network that is, but then your cohorts parade around saying no, it's actually all the other media that is biased.

Just sayin.

I wonder how many of the Liberals who knock Fox News have actually watched it. I suspect very few. After all, if they hear that Fox News does not follow the leftist agenda it can't be any good. (Yawn)

News reports on FOX are about s good as anywhere else. But the folks who claim to watch FOX news are not only watching news. FOX viewers are treated to an eclectic mix of news reporting and "edutainment" programming which pretend to be news, but are really radical right wing opinion programming (like the "No Spin Zone").

Limbaugh, O'Hanity, Beck, Palin etc., are not especially interested in news facts. They make their money selling their entertaining opinions.
