Letter: APS makes us pay for going green

I am sure by now you have all received notice of an APS rate increase granted by our corporation commission. Why do we stand by and allow all these companies to steal from our pocketbooks?

They preached to us to make better use of our electricity, not wash during peak hours, use low-watt bulbs and turn off all lights when not in use. I don't even try to outdo my neighbors with Christmas lights anymore. Call it guilt; I'm wasting precious energy. I've even punished my grandchildren for not turning off the power cord.

Now we are all being punished for conserving energy.

APS should be fined for wasting all that money going green. Millions on letterheads, new truck logos and all that advertising. Now they can't afford envelopes for you to mail your bills.

When will it end?

Teresa Reeser

Nationalize the APS powewr grid then charge the utility corporations. We should get rebates for use of Solar ,wind. If we were as smart as the Chinese they use methane produced from domestic septic tanks to fuel homes. THE USA greedy Corps and their Alec funded Repubs need to go they are as outdated as Fossil fuels!

Article comment by: Don't take the pro-solar arguments at face value

I worked in the Solar Industry for years. I think it has it's place (off grid), but here's the simple truth. Not one of the senior executives in the Company (12 people), President, VP, and Senior Directors had solar on their house. Why? It made no sense economically, even with the government subsidies, and none of us felt like wasting any of our own money. I left 8 years ago so maybe it's changed to a degree but I doubt it is significant. That industry survives because liberal politicians continue to tax throw money at it. Money that, by and large, is simply repaying donors to liberal campaigns. Remember Solyndra? Yep!

So sweetly naive. The Az Corp Comm's job is NOT to serve the citizenry of the state, but the corporations doing business in the state. APS' job is NOT to serve the citizenry of the state, but those members of the ruling class that own the stock, hold high corporate office and sit on the company board. The corporations are owned by the ruling class and the ACC is run by the ruling class.

Why is this so hard for everybody to understand? How do we manage to remain so gullible, so without guile? Why do so many need to maintain the delusion that there is no ruling class, that this is a free country built upon fairness and equal opportunity?

The corporations ARE entitled. The country exists for them. They own the country, they run the government, capitalism exists for them -- not for us, the peasantry, but the hyper-wealthy few.

Looks like we all need to go out and vote things all better once again. What a joke! What a con! When are we EVER gonna catch on? Never, quite obviously.

If anyone wants to see the government and its agencies operating on their behalf, the first step is to become fabulously rich. Then you get to live on the other side of the curtain, the plush side. Until you understand that you remain a credulous fool.

If you think conserving energy is punishing, try wasting energy.

Since all of our energy comes from an old coal fired power plant (which is thankfully hundreds of miles to the north), any energy you save not only saves you money, it also means less polluting coal emissions.

The main reason why it is no longer wise to eat fish caught in America's lakes and streams is because of mercury poisoning which is the result of burning coal.

One day, your children will either thank you or curse you - depending on which environment you leave them.

Article comment by: Vote for Republicans For Corporation Commission

Why Arizonans keep electing Republicans to the Corporation Commission is baffling. Those people never saw a rate increase they didn't love. The Republicans are active supporters of the corporations in America, and will allow them to gouge the consumer every chance they get. Sorry Arizona, you voted for these people, live with the outcome. No whining now!

The blame lies with the Republicans on the Corporation Commission. The Corporation Commission placed limits on the amount of electricity that APS can produce and mandated that a specific percentage come from green sources then approved the rate increase.

I am glad you are saving energy you are helping the environment and saving money. If you want to save even more and help stem climate change why not collect some of the money APS has on hand by getting an energy audit or upgrading appliances. To really make a difference consider solar panels on your roof.

Article comment by: Very Typical

This is very typical. Today's liberal agenda makes much of this "tree-hugging" technology sound oh so warm and fuzzy when in all reality, it ends up costing more money than it saves and holds no solid proof of scientific benefits.

Just like our growing number of government entitlement programs, the answer is always "somebody has to pay for it". That somebody is the working class public. (The keyword here is WORKING).

The big picture: The Californication of our country that will inevitability mirror it to European countries and destroy it.

Article comment by: It's Called Entitlement

In our new USA, Inc, corporations think they are ENTITLED to profit and high CEO pay, and even entitled to protection from any losses, and we taxpayers have to pay for it through the nose. Hefty bank profits and CEO salaries are still generated from free taxpayer money which they loan out at higher rates.

It's capitalistic socialism, where the corporate welfare queens demand more and more, and the government gives our money to them, from the federal down to the local level - using our tax dollars to build huge sports stadiums, giving unneeded tax 'incentives' as bribes, moving mountains for a mall, etc. and sticking it to us.

Ironic, isn't it, that government insurance programs that we actually PAY into individually each month/paycheck are labeled 'entitlements', but it isn't an entitlement when corporations get guaranteed profits and absolute protection against loss at the expense of all the taxpayers.

Tip of the iceberg. The system is totally rigged. THEY have a new economic system which sure ain't your grandfather's Capitalism.

Article comment by: Arizona Corporation Commission Failed the Citizens of Arizona

Bloomberg News states: Electricity Declines 50% as Shale Spurs Natural Gas Glut:
A shale-driven glut of natural gas has cut fuel prices for the production of electricity within U.S. power industry by 50 percent and reduced investment in costlier sources of energy.* So what the heck gives here? This is about good ol-fashioned American government supported (Arizona Corporation Commission), unbridled, capitalistic greed! The Arizona Public Service company is doing just fine, thank you! APS profits increased by 38.65% to $130.11 million for the quarter over the year ago quarter!** THIRTY EIGHT POINT SIX FIVE PERCENT!!! Are you listening? Remember, this is a MONOPOLY!!!… there is NO COMPETITION! Their President / Chief Operating Officer, Donald Robinson is pulling in $4,840,000 bucks per year (in the top AZ ten). Still somehow their lawyers talked the Arizona Corporation Commission into this increase? It really makes you wonder: what, exactly, was going on in the Commissioners dimly glowing brains or wallets!

Finally, eventually all of us, even the ultra-conservative GOP (The Party of NO!) folks will realize that the Sun in Arizona produces enormous amounts of energy. If your home's roof faces south, you can put photovoltaics on your roof and save a bunch of money selling the excess energy to APS. Prices are going down for solar cells, efficiency is going up, longevity is going up! In another 20 years every roof in the state will have coverings (shingle like) photovoltaic systems producing huge amounts of energy. Part of the energy will go into very efficient, long range, battery powered, electrical cars, some to very efficient electrical systems (LED lighting etc.) within the home, finally the excess goes to the grid and other consumers to use!
