Letter: Medicaid money came from outside source

EDITOR:

Gov. Jan Brewer has been receiving accolades for the expansion of Medicaid coverage for Arizonans. Obviously, the rewards for these newfound benefits are greatly needed. However, she and her conservative friends should be thanking President Obama for getting the Affordable Health Care Act passed in spite of her and other so called conservatives.

The Medicaid dollars did not come from Brewer; they came thanks to President Obama. Perhaps she should thank him publicly instead of wagging her finger.

God bless that Robin Hood!

He was the best!

He helped the poor! He gave money to the poor!

Steal from the rich?!? Huh?!? I have no idea what you're talking about. Robin just simply pulled money out of his quiver from whence it magically appeared.

@ Tom Von Deck

I completely agree that what we need is Medicare for all. That is the only type of medical payment that is actually working. In the rest of the world the government finances medicine. If that were case here employers wouldn’t have to send one third of a worker’s pay to an insurance company. That would result in a huge wage increase for everyone and also greatly improve our completive advantage with the rest of the world. Health costs are the single greatest reason for outsourcing of American jobs. It would be paid for by a payroll tax increase that would apply to every worker including CEO’s, actors, and professional athletes.

@ American Patriot: you may need to work 3 jobs to pay for your health insurance. Why do you think you can walk across the border and buy the exact same drug for 1/3 the price you can here? Answer: because Americans are freaking stupid, and nobody will stand up to big pharma. The only Canadians who come here for health care are rich and believe me, they don't go to the same doctors and hospitals that you do. Neither do the shieks that rent out a whole floor at Barrow's. American healthcare is the laughingstock of the world.

Does anyone else notice that the same people who claim that government has no money until it takes some from the taxpayer ALSO claim that the government simply prints money to pay its bills?

Sounds like Hal Trout is one of those liberals who wear rose colored glasses and a blindfold. I suppose Hal believes that Obama reached into his bill fold, pulled out several billion dollars that was supposed to be his kids allowance and then gave it to him and others. It is so sad to live in a dumbed down society. Everywhere I go I see dumb people walking around. The sad part is they vote, and look at the mess they have made.

Article comment by: Thank The Taxpayer, NOT Obama

@Mr. Trout-You, my friend, are very misguided because any monies come from the working taxpayer, NOT Obama. And, the taxpayer even pays his salary, how about that.

Money comes from you and I. It did not come from Obama. My prenium went up, if it goes up much further, I will be one of them paying the IRS penalty for not having insurance.

Keep your socialized medicine. I will pay whatever the cost to keep my insurance even if I have to work three jobs. I don't look for other to take care of me I take care of myself. Many Canadian friends disagree over the system in their nation and come to the US for treatment. Where will we run when the government seizes even more of our rights. As for Mr. Socialist (Obama) thanks for buying off your constituency with the scraps falling from the table of the workers in America. As long as they have bread and circuses they will all be happy! Oh ya and government funded medical pot.....Toke it up my friends while America burns!

As stated by Tom V our healthcare is expensive. It's over 15% of our GDP is for heathcare, several times higher than most nations. We are among the lowest in overall health (#72), life expectancy (#50), infant mortality (horrible) and the most expensive. Only 84% of Americans have insurance (horrible compared to other coutries). The reason we are so horrible is because health care providers (hospitals, doctors, drug companies, you name it) charge outrageous prices, and insurance companies pay them. You can have a bypass in India (airfare included) for about $10k by a better surgeon and in a better hospital with lower mortality than you can here where it costs $60k. Obamacare does virtually nothing to correct this either. It's going to raise taxes, and it already has.

The federal government funds up to 50% of the cost of each state's Medicaid program, with more affluent states receiving less funding than less affluent states. Because of this federal/state partnership, there are actually 50 different Medicaid programs, one for each state.
The one for Arizona gets put into the general fund thus screwing the citizens of Arizona once more.

@Victor Holm: Our system is expensive precisely because it's not government funded. It's insurance based. One specialist looked inside my ear with an ear looking device and itemized it on paper as a "surgical procedure" and charged $3000 because insurance pays for it, no big whoop. Universal single payer health care would never survive on such a scheme, and the insurance racket is why programs like Medicade are so expensive. Other countries like Germany, Canada, etc don't have that problem. Therefore, it appears that it's not socialization that makes it so expensive.

Poor Hal has been drinking the Kool-Aid. Thanks to Obama Care? Dont know about everyone else, but our medical insurance cost went up again this year and added to that a higher co-pay. Also, the dollars didnt come from Obama, they came from people like me that pay federal income taxes!

Hey, Hal, the only real money the federal government has is tax dollars from the citizens. When are people going to realize that just because the feds can "print" dollars, that doesn't mean they actually have any more money? This is the same thing that happened in Weimar Germany that led to the national socialists taking power under the direction of the ever popular Adolph Hitler.

I actually agree that Medicaid needs to be funded but the way you put it is typical of most liberals. The money did not come from the President unless he personally donated the money it came from American taxpayers and deficit spending. What we need to ask is: why is our government funded medicine more expensive than any other place in the world.

@ Hal: Did you overlook the fact that the money doesn't actually come from President Obama -- it comes from the taxpayers -- that's US.
Your kind of muddled thinking doesn't help hurts us all.

But Hal, that's not the Republican way!

Remember all the Congressmen lined up to be on-hand when the bailout checks were allotted? They couldn't wait to be smiling away in the photo-op, despite having scratched and clawed against said bail-out beforehand.

You must be new to Republican politics....

When Hal says "Medicaid dollars did not come from Brewer they came thanks to President Obama" What he meant to say was Medicaid dollars did not come from Brewer they came from OUR (yours and my) tax dollars. I sure did not see Obama pull out HIS personal wallet for any of this wild spending. Although it seems like it may be the case, Obama is not the only politician who can use public dollars. Thank a rich American for the money.

Where does all this money come from? You know the trillions of dollars of debt the Country has and they keep borrowing and printing more money with no approved budget or plans to reduce the deficit. Its disgusting seeing you "Obama Lovers" praising his actions when this Country is about bankrupt.

This is precisely where the liberal "believers" in Obama's policies fail to recognize reality. Is Obama writing the checks to cover the increased Medicaid costs? No, the money is will come from future tax payers. Tax payers who have yet to find jobs in an economy that is barely growing under the current administration's policies.
