Big win carries Bagdad into football's 2nd round
Elite 8 matchup at Mogollon up next
The Daily Courier

It's on to the Division VI state quarterfinals for the Bagdad High football team.

The No. 7-seeded Sultans shredded No. 10 Gilbert Christian, 56-12, in the first round of the D-VI state tournament at home Friday night behind its potent rushing game and clutch defensive play.

With the victory, Bagdad (7-2) travels to No. 2 seed Heber Mogollon at 7 p.m. next Friday with an opportunity to reach the state semifinals. Mogollon, an eight-man football power for years, owns a 7-1 record.

"I'm super-excited about where our team is at this point," first-year Bagdad coach Dalton Mills said. "I'm excited for the challenge of going to Mogollon and seeing what they have."

On Friday, Gilbert Christian scored early on the Sultans, but Mills said his team made some key defensive adjustments that helped lead to the win.

"Once we did that, we shut them down for the night," Mills said.

The Sultans rushed for 369 total yards on the strength of sophomore running back Casey Jeans, who ran for 206 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.

Sophomore RB Justin Pacheco had eight rushes for 23 yards and a TD, and junior Kody Low ran 80 yards on just two carries with a rushing TD and a receiving TD.

Standout wide receiver James Loveall, who has been suffering from a bruised Achilles' tendon, did play Friday and hauled in a 62-yard TD reception.

Sultans quarterback Kendall Jeans, who was also playing in pain with a deep bruise to his hip that he sustained in a victory over Phoenix Valley Lutheran last week, fared well.

Kendall Jeans went 3-for-6 passing for 107 yards and two TDs. He also played a crucial role on defense Friday in his spot as a defensive back, swiping two interceptions.
