It didn't come easy for the Yavapai College softball team, but the Roughriders clinched their fifth straight trip to the NJCAA Region 1, Division 1 tournament this weekend at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott.
YC needed one win over Div. 2 No. 2-ranked Phoenix College in a season-ending doubleheader on Saturday to qualify for the postseason.
Instead, the Roughriders swept the Bears, 3-2 in extra innings and 14-6 in a run-rule shortened affair, to claim the fourth and final seed into regionals.
Yavapai will now face top-seeded Central Arizona in the region tourney's first round that starts this Friday in Casa Grande.
On Saturday, YC trailed Phoenix 2-1 in the seventh inning of the first game until Brooke Eifert-Pancamo hit a solo home run to force the game into extra innings.
The Roughriders loaded the bases in the eighth and Jade Yost hit an RBI-single to plate Mita Cortez for the game winner.
Brandi Heimburg, Yost and Lauren Gourdin had two hits apiece. Heimburg tagged a solo homer in the third.
On the slab, Aundria Zuniga-Romero threw the complete game for her 29th win of the year.
The victory clinched the playoff spot for Yavapai and took some of the pressure off of the team heading into the finale.
In Game 2, YC scored at least one run in each inning.
Yavapai pounded out 15 hits, including six for extra bases. Yost was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs, three runs scored and two homers. Eifert-Pancamo was 3-for-3 with five RBIs, two runs scored and torched her second jack of the day.
The Roughriders will be seeking their fifth NJCAA Region 1 Division title. The winner of the region tournament will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament beginning May 15 in St. George, Utah.
