In a rematch pitting the two softball teams that vied for the National Junior College Athletic Association Region I, Division I championship last spring, Yavapai College and Pima C.C. split an Arizona Conference doubleheader Saturday in Tucson.
The Roughriders used some late-game heroics to win its opening league contest of the 2013 season against No. 9-ranked Pima, 4-3, before falling in the nightcap, 7-5.
Yavapai, which was upset by the Aztecs in the 2012 regional finals last May in Prescott, now owns a 5-4 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference play.
In the first game Saturday, YC trailed 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning, but came back in that frame to take the lead and ultimately snare the win.
The Roughriders' Kasey Oliver plated the tying run from third base when Brooke Eifert-Pancoma was walked with the bases loaded. Tied at 3-3, Hannah Hill would later score the winning run on a fielder's choice off the bat of pitcher Aundria Zuniga-Romero.
Despite surrendering 11 hits and striking out none on the slab, Zuniga-Romero picked up her fourth victory of the 2013 campaign, and aided her cause with the game-winning RBI.
Brandi Heimburg continued her hot start at the dish for Yavapai, going 3-for-4. Oliver went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and Eifert-Pancoma was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, the game was tied in the bottom of the sixth until YC gave up a go-ahead two-run homer to Pima. The Roughriders failed to rebound in the seventh and went on to suffer the 7-5 loss.
Yavapai's Val Luera had two hits and 2 RBIs in the losing cause, while teammate Alma Cortez went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
YC moves on in conference play Tuesday at fellow Div. 1 opponent Central Arizona College. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
