Late rally lifts Sundogs past Americans
The Daily Courier

The Arizona Sundogs snapped a three-game losing streak in fine fashion Saturday night, coming from behind to defeat the CHL's first-place Allen (Texas) Americans, 4-2, in front of 4,350 fans on the road.

With the win at the Allen Event Center near Dallas, the Sundogs handed the Americans (12-4-1 overall record, 25 points) just their second home loss of the season. Arizona now stands at 9-7-3, four points behind Allen.

The Sundogs, who improved to 2-4 against the Americans, are currently tied for fourth in the Berry Conference standings with the Denver Cutthroats.

In a cleanly played game Saturday - as opposed to the penalty-filled three-game series these teams had at Tim's Toyota Center Nov. 21, 23 and 24 - the clubs combined for 24 minutes of penalties on nine infractions.

The Sundogs accounted for 15 of those 24 penalty minutes on six infractions.

Arizona trailed the Americans 2-1 at the end of the second period before rallying to score three unanswered goals in the third.

Forwards Derek LeBlanc and Chad Nehring, Arizona's leading scorer, paced the Sundogs offensively with a goal and an assist apiece.

With Arizona behind 2-1 late in the contest, Jake Hauswirth netted the equalizer 11 minutes and 3 seconds into the third on an assist from Adam Smyth and Cody Purves.

LeBlanc followed with the go-ahead goal at the 14:20 mark on helpers from Nehring and Mario Larocque.

Up 3-2 with 10 seconds left in regulation, Kyle Hood tallied an empty-netter on an assist from LeBlanc to seal the victory.

After a scoreless first period, Nehring gave the Sundogs a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal 7:50 into the second frame.

But Allen responded quickly, snagging a 2-1 edge on back-to-back goals from Brian McMillin and Anthony Maiani that were spaced only 48 seconds apart at the 9:09 and 9:57 junctures of the second.

The Americans out-shot the Sundogs 37-31 for the game, but Arizona held the clear advantage on shots in the third by a margin of 16-6.

On the power play, Arizona was 0-for-1, while Allen went 0-for-4.

Sundogs goalie David Brown, who stopped 35 of 37 shots, picked up the win to improve his record to 5-4-1 with a 2.24 goals against average and a .925 save percentage.

Arizona travels to the last-place Tulsa (Okla.) Oilers at 3:05 p.m. today before returning home for four games starting Tuesday against Denver. The puck drops at 6:05 p.m. for that game.
