Yavapai soccer team knocked from ranks of unbeaten in loss to Phoenix

After making it through the first half of the Arizona Conference season unscathed, the No. 2-ranked Yavapai College men's soccer team finally succumbed Thursday night on the road.

The Roughriders could not hold a 1-0 halftime lead against Phoenix College, as the Bears came from behind to win 2-1 on the strength of two goals from PC freshman Ryo Sugihara in Phoenix.

In the 50th minute, shortly after the break, Sugihara booted the equalizer to knot the score at 1-1. Sugihara later knocked in the eventual game-winner with about 16 minutes left in regulation on an assist from freshman Tony Garcia.

Despite the setback, Yavapai remains in first place atop the Arizona Conference standings with an 11-1-0 record, 12-1-0 overall.

NJCAA D-I 11th-ranked Arizona Western (10-2-0 league), which is in second place, now sits just three points behind the Roughriders in the standings by virtue of its 2-0 victory over Glendale Thursday.

Yavapai has 33 points to Western's 30 points.

The Roughriders, who went undefeated during the 2011 regular season, had not lost a match since last Oct. 29 in a 2-0 setback to Pima in the NJCAA Division I, Region I championship at Ken Lindley Field.

YC returns home to the Mountain Valley Amphitheater in Prescott Valley Saturday when they play host to third-place Glendale (8-3-1, 25 points). Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
