Yavapai volleyball bumps off ranked opponent in opener
The Daily Courier

A big opening day for the Yavapai College volleyball team may get the unranked Roughriders into the national discussion.

Yavapai knocked off No. 11 Seminole State (Fla.) in five games on Friday at the season-opening New Mexico Military Institute Invitational, and in dramatic fashion. The Roughriders trailed 0-1 and then 1-2, and still managed to pull out the win with an 18-16 match finale over a Seminole club that finished 35-5 last season.

The match's final line went 22-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-17, 18-16.

Sophomore Hannah Hill and freshman Jennifer Sadler each finished with 12 kills in the winning effort, followed closely by Liz Culhane who added 11. Sophomore setter Libby Ary dished 43 assists, and sophomore Jordan Lopez contributed 22 digs on defense.

The Roughriders opened tournament play with a three-game win over Frank Phillips (Texas) College by scores of 25-23, 26-24, 25-22.

Hill's nine kills led the attack. Ary passed 23 assists.

Play continues Saturday for Yavapai (2-0) at the tournament with matches against Odessa, Texas (8 a.m.) and No. 14 Seward County, Kan. (3:30 p.m.).

The Roughriders won't make their first home appearance until Phoenix visits Prescott on Sept. 3.
