Night 'off' turns into another Yavapai soccer win
The Daily Courier

In what otherwise might have been a night off for the Yavapai College men's soccer team, they instead took on a ranked team for the second time in three nights.

The Arizona JUCO conference saw its season hit the halfway point this weekend, and No. 2-ranked Yavapai originally had a Saturday night bye until the season's second half ramps up this Tuesday. But with the Minnesota-based No. 20-ranked Blue Knights on a weeklong trip through Arizona last week, the Roughriders scheduled the non-conference match for the Mountain Valley Park Amphitheater in Prescott Valley on what could have been a night off.

The result was a 2-0 victory for the Roughriders, who improved to 11-0-0 on the fall season. Julien Dragomir and Kyle Morris scored in each half, respectively, and keeper Agustin Rey pitched the team's ninth shutout in 11 games with his two saves in 90 minutes.

The Roughriders do have a brief history with the Blue Knights. The teams hooked up once before, in 2008, when Yavapai won 7-0.

The matchup this time also made for the rare opportunity for the Roughriders to face back-to-back nationally-ranked clubs, including one out of conference. On Saturday night, Yavapai was coming off a 4-1 win over No. 6-ranked Arizona Western on Thursday.

Back in 2007, then-ranked Schoolcraft (Mich.) and San Jacinto (Texas) visited Ken Lindley Field in Prescott to challenge YC with back-to-back ranked clubs out of conference.

On Saturday night, Dragomir connected in the 35th minute, and the match would stay that tight the whole way before Morris made good on his goal just two minutes before the final horn.

The victory marked win No. 250 all-time at home for the YC program. Between both home fields in Prescott and Prescott Valley, the program is 250-9-1 at home since 1989, including a perfect 43-0-0 run in PV.

Yavapai's four-game home stand ends this Tuesday when Scottsdale visits Lindley Field for a 6 p.m. kickoff in a match that officially begins the second half of the season. The Roughriders handled Scottsdale 7-0 in their season opener last month.

Dakota County (5-3-0), meanwhile, wraps up its swing through Arizona with a match at Mesa on Monday.
