Yavapai soccer re-gains 1st place in conference

Baseball's boys of summer aren't finished in the fall in Prescott. They're just getting started.
With the Diamondbacks tumbling to the worst record in MLB, the undefeated Cardinals climbing to first place in the NFC West, the Yavapai College soccer team remaining unbeaten in its first 13 matches, and high school football squads battling for playoff spots, not too many folks in Prescott are focused on baseball this time of the year.

There are, however, a few exceptions.

Yavapai soccer rained out, but still loses sole possession of 1st
Rain washed out the Yavapai College soccer team's chance to pad its lead atop the Arizona conference on Saturday, and Glendale took advantage.

The nation's No. 2-ranked Roughriders were scheduled to battle the sub-.500 Artichokes in Scottsdale for a 5:30 p.m. tilt, but rainstorms ended any hope of a kickoff. The match will instead take place at 6 p.m. on Monday, also at Scottsdale.

Twombly-Ellis finishes 1st for Prescott at Bradshaw cross country invite
Mingus Union's boys' and girls' teams made it a clean sweep at the annual Bradshaw Mountain Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning in Dewey, winning the meet before heavy thunderstorms arrived later in the afternoon.

On the boys' side, the Marauders posted 32 first-place points, followed by Prescott High (2nd place, 46 points), Bradshaw Mountain (3rd, 48) and Buckeye Union (4th, 103) at the BM Middle School course.

Chino Valley cross country completes road trip to Los Angeles
Chino Valley High's cross country team hit the road to compete in the Bell-Jeff Invite at Griffith Park in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Cougars' girls' team finished fourth in the medium schools division (700 to 1,800 students) with 143 points.

Bradshaw football's big lead holds up at Mingus
COTTONWOOD, Arizona - Bradshaw Mountain High's football team won its second section game thanks to a big first half.

The Bears, the defending Division 3, Section 4 champions, took a 21-0 halftime lead and went on to pick up a key 34-14 victory over Mingus Union here Friday.

With their win Friday night, the Bagdad Sultans closed the book on a perfect September. They're getting pretty good at perfection.

The defending Division 6 state champions came off their bye week by trouncing Arizona Charter Academy 64-14 in their D6, Section 3 opener.

PHOENIX - The Diamondbacks fired manager Kirk Gibson three years after he won the NL's manager of the year award for leading Arizona to the playoffs.

The Diamondbacks are assured of at least a tie for the worst record in the majors this season, having lost 96 games entering the final series of the year.

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - When asked how many years they've been working on the "chain gang" at Bradshaw Mountain High's varsity home football games, Larry Haese and George Ponte can't seem to come to a consensus.

Ponte swears it's been around 20.

Haese insists it's been 15.

The Badgers, winners of two in a row, hit the road to take on Mohave for their second Division 3, Section 4 contest of the season.

Prescott got off to a solid start in section last week in a blowout victory over rival Flagstaff at Bill Shepard Field. Expect more of the same this evening against the Thunderbirds, losers of three straight.

Yavapai soccer blasts Gateway, stays unbeaten in ACCAC
There was a tinge of déjà vu in the air Thursday night at Ken Lindley Field in Prescott.

After the NJCAA No. 2-ranked Yavapai College men's soccer team routed Arizona conference doormat Gateway, 10-0, the Roughriders most certainly realized that they had defeated the Geckos by the same count a month ago in their 2014 season opener in Phoenix.

The Badgers swept Coconino, 25-15, 25-18, 25-20, Thursday night at the PHS Dome.

Raphael Temple (15 kills, 14 assists), Erinn Marroquin (two aces, 13 assists), Sydney Koehler (12 kills) and Grace Hendricks (two aces, 16 digs) led the hosts.

Prescott plays in the Goldwater Tournament today and Saturday in Phoenix.

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona - As a youngster growing up in Phoenix in the late 1950s and early '60s, Ron Dowdy would head out to watch his best friend's dad race stock cars at Manzanita Speedway.

Later in life, Ron focused more on his day job, but he never lost his passion for the sport, which he passed down to his son, Chuck.

Chino Valley girls' soccer wins second straight, climbs to 6-4
The Cougars girls' soccer team won its second consecutive match on Tuesday at Chino Valley High, improving its overall record to 6-4 on the 2014 season.

Chino will continue on with its season-long five-match home stand Friday when it hosts Desert Christian in a Division 4, Section 2 tilt. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
