Former Prescott High School star and Mississippi State University standout middle blocker Mandy Mellencamp this week joined the Yavapai College volleyball program's staff as an assistant coach, head coach Matt Cohen announced Tuesday.
Mellencamp, a Prescott native, replaces former Roughriders assistant Rachel Williams, who left the YC campus within the past week to pursue other coaching opportunities.
Mellencamp graduated from PHS in 2008 and continued her athletic and academic career at NCAA Division I Missi sippi State in Starkville, Miss.
While at Prescott High, Mellencamp earned All-Region honors following her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. In addition, as a senior, she garnered a spot on the All-State team and was named the 2007-08 PHS Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
At Mississippi State, Mellencamp made the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Academic Honor Roll in each of the four years she attended.
During her freshman season in a Bulldogs uniform, Mellencamp was the lone freshman to start in all 31 of the squad's matches, finishing third on the team in kills and second in blocks.
After a season-ending injury cut short her sophomore year, she bounced back as a junior, playing in 25 of MSU's 31 matches.
Cohen said he's thrilled to have a one-time local product come on board as an assistant coach.
"I'm super excited," he said of having Mellencamp in the fold. "She will do a really great job."
