You're stressing me out! Some foods may ease stress

Hello Simply Fit readers. My topic this month is stress. We all have different levels of stress in our lives. Sometimes that stress is mild like a tiny splinter and other times stress is a two-headed monster sitting on your chest making it difficult to breathe, sleep or eat.

Dealing with stress is different for everyone. I have always tried to deal with stress with exercise. Exercise allows my body to release the pain that my mind can not.

Fear, anxiety, grief are all very complex emotions that are not easily expressed in words in fact, I find it almost impossible to "let it out" in words that even make sense sometimes. Working up a good sweat, leaving it all in the gym, allows my body to release the tension so that my mind can focus. Nothing is hopeless after a good workout.

Speaking of stress, a new study states that women's minds may age prematurely due to stress. This really stresses me out!

Stress has also been linked to the following illnesses: depression, diabetes, hair loss, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, obesity, obsessive-compulsive or anxiety disorder, sexual dysfunction, tooth and gum disease, ulcers, and possibly cancer.

Stress is not an emotion to take lightly. It puts our body into a constant "fight or flight" mode which was great for our hairy ancestors when they had to drop their dinner and run for their lives, but not so great for you and me when that response does not shut off.

Luckily for us, Mother Nature has provided some stress relief through nutrition.

Here is a list from Askmen.com of the top 10 stress reducing foods:

• Almonds

• Fish

• Broccoli

• Whole-grain rice or pasta

• Sushi

• Milk

• Cantaloupe and cottage cheese

• Beef

• Fortified breakfast cereal

• Blueberries

Here is a list of foods to avoid during stressful times according to Peoples Medical Society:

• Avoid excessive caffeine or other stimulants as they may cause anxiety.

• Processed foods

• Artificial sweeteners

• Carbonated drinks

• Chocolate

• Eggs

• Fried foods

• Junk foods

• Pork

• Red meat

• Sugar

• White flour products

• Chips and similar snacks

• Foods containing preservatives or heavy spices.

Don't be stressed.

I guess I will need to start going to Trader Joe's to shop for the "lesser stress" alternative foods that they seem to specialize in. BUT WAIT! Just getting a parking spot and getting through the checkout is stressful enough over there! I had better try someplace else. Oh well.

Thank you .... I suffered a head injury in an MVA a few months ago ... your last paragraph summed it up for me beautifully! I have been trying to find a way to explain the feeling verbally. Thank you for bringing attention to this during a very stressful society on the whole.

Everyone has a different body metabolism. What one person can eat is not always palatable to another. I find cutting sugar and taking my B12 supplements help my energy boost instead of these phony sugarized drinks filled with no nutriests. I have cut back on dairy and use non-fat yogurts and milk. Multi grains also help with bowels. I don't want to be visiting the doctor or dentist more than once a year!
