Do the politicians' lies bother you? Do you care?

 Tim Wiederaenders

The Associated Press

The debates are well under way: President Obama versus Mitt Romney; Vice President Joe Biden versus Paul Ryan.

Problem is the lies are rampant, despite efforts by the fact checkers and the parties themselves.

We live in a world where it is practically impossible to know what is fact and what is partisan fiction. And, fact checkers are having trouble gaining much traction.

Obama: 5 million jobs created.

Romney: 23 million unemployed.

Both were wrong.

When someone says otherwise during the election cycle, others - read: voters - may be listening, but it is not clear that there are lasting consequences, changes or effects.

Have you been watching the debates? Does any of this enter into your "choice" come Election Day?

It should.

"3. The IOU's which are huge on the Republican side will come due."

Are you forgetting the biggest of the IOU's? The fact that Obama has raised the debt ceiling so we wouldn't fall into default and for the fact that Obama brought us into a deficit of Trillions of dollars more than we have ever been in history... since when did you think that Obama's IOU's would never come due?

Hello, my fellow American voters!

I watched the 4 October debates which covered 28 topics: jobs spending/budget deficit/debt tax reform federal gov’t economic regulation and role medicare social security entitlements (medicaid, food stamps, etc.) healthcare gas prices equal pay abortion illegal immigrants assault weapons partisan gridlock negative campaign tactics candidate misperceptions Bush policies Obama’s record U.S. world role military policy/spending U.S. national security threats Libya, Syria Egypt Israel Iran Afghanistan China.

Romney and Ryan won all 4 debates, although Romney slightly won the 2nd and 3rd debates.
In the 3rd debate (unlike in prior debates), Obama reflected his weakness and disrespect by interrupting Romney a lot and using too many “one-line quips” to try to denigrate Romney.
Ryan won despite Biden’s consistently rude behavior (often interrupted Ryan, laughed when Ryan talked, pointed his finger).
Romney/Ryan won with substance, directness, integrity, respect, clarity, facts, commitment, inspiration, credibility, and leadership.

As an INDEPENDENT female feminist (egalitarian) voter, I support the Romney/Ryan ticket.
Romney and Ryan, with their no-nonsense and methodic approach to solving America’s problems, are the best persons in terms of qualifications and character to lead our country and make life better for all Americans. I hope that you are inspired by Romney/Ryan!

Best regards,

Cas Lee

Article comment by: It's a win for the democrats no matter what!! !!

I think the Repueblicans should win. Think about it.

1. The republicans truly get what they screwed up.
2. It will be the last stand for the rich white guy.
3. The IOU's which are huge on the Republican side will come due.
4. We will truly see about the 47% and the
5. Republicans will once again have a chance to screw international relationships up. And from a short trip it will be monumental.
6. I say let them win and royally screw things up. Cause it will happen. Guaranteed. We call it letting the train wreck.
7. I would put money on it that it will be the last time anyone will vote for a republican president.

Article comment by: Also a worried parent

I fear that the intolerance and disdain and hate for anybody who doesn't fit the mold (e.g., straight, white, well-off) will increase under Republican rule.

I am a Christian and vote based on who exhibits a more telling commitment to the ideals of Christ: it certainly isn't cult member Romney with all his greed and intolerance.

Jesus wept, indeed.

I have a daughter, grandaughter and another grandaughter on the way. Is this election just about one issue....no I don't think so. Do we sometimes vote because of one issue...yes, we probably do. I'm not just worried about my daughter and grandaughters, but about my son and grandsons. What type of America will be there for them after 4 more years of Obama? As a retired business woman, I know what and who will help bring America back......not just for my daughters, but for my whole family.

The party does not matter they will all tell you what you want to hear to get your vote.
Why not?? There is very little accountability once they are in office. With the exception of something really major they will not be held responsible and there is nothing you are going to do about it.
And just my comments~why do we still have an electoral vote system? We can do the popular vote really easy, and could have years ago
Let the popular vote become law so that we can quite playing the two party games.

I'm sure you believed there were WMD in Iraq?

Here's a clue: they all lie. Sometimes for national security, sometimes to make themselves look good, sometimes to start wars to help cronies make billions of dollars.

Article comment by: Don't LIE About Our Security

don't lie about F&F and our national security. Terrorism is nothing to "cover-up" but a serious matter and I don't appreciate a sitting president who blatantly lies to the public. What else is he hiding from us?

You are only unemployed if you want to be.

You are only poor if you want to be.

These are the core tenets of the Republican Party - YOU are responsible for YOU. YOUR choices created YOUR situation. Sorry you don't want to work - NOT MY PROBLEM.

I fully subscribe to this view and cannot wait until Obama and all his handouts are LONG GONE.

Today, there are more women unemployed, living in poverty as head of households, with children, on food stamps and living in their cars than there were four years ago.

At least they will have "free" birth control and "free" abortions.

Let's hear it for Obama!

Article comment by: Mitt's record with women

When Romney took office as governor of Massachusetts, he fired one of the three Labor Commissioners. Helen A. Moreschi and replaced her with one of his cronies (male of course) who had little experience. This was even though she was eminently qualified and experienced and had also worked in both Democratic and Republican administrations previously. About a year prior to Romney giving her the boot and putting her out of work with only a fraction of her pension, Helen had been honored by both labor and management [and the Archbishop for Boston] for her fairness, commitment to the people, and her knowledge of the law. She was a shining example for women having worked her way through college as the oldest of 12 children and first in her family to attend college, and was the first woman admitted to the bricklayer's union in Boston where she worked laying bricks during the day while she went to law school at night.

A true example of the American dream cast aside by Mitt (I have binders full of women) Romney.

Article comment by: All hard working Americans have jobs

It's only the lazy freeloaders who want a ride on the entitlement express who choose to be out of work. That is a fact.

That is why all hard working Americans are voting for the Republican candidate (47th in job creation - 1 billion dollar debt as governor) while only the lazy freeloaders who hate America are voting to continue the socialist handout state.

This is a favorite lie of mine. Mitt didn't actively decide to go looking for any women to hire. LIAR.

It is nice to see that he supports affirmative action though...

Silly Mitt.

to get a vote and he cares nothing about gays, women's rights or immigration. He's a politician, lawyer from Chicago and him and Axelrod are "pros" at intimidation and lying. Get real citizens and look at his past 4 years, they speak for themselves.

Voters like Dutch somehow think Romney really cares about making their lives better?

Newt Gingrich (R) even pointed it out for voters like Dutch:

"...... We have to ultimately focus on beating Barack Obama, but we’re not going to beat Barack Obama with some guy who has Swiss bank accounts, Cayman Island accounts, owns shares of Goldman Sachs while it forecloses on Florida and is himself a stockholder in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while he tries to think the rest of us are too stupid to put the dots together to understand what this is all about.”

I'll help you Dutch: It's not about helping poor white folks like you - it's about power and money and helping his main campaign contributors: the financial institutions that help people who haven't lifted a finger in their lives make more money than you'll see in a hundred lifetimes.

But sure - worry about the gays and the Libyans and whatever other bogeyman who will never ever affect your life here in the quad cities one iota.

People who lie typically don't bother me. Sales people exaggerate if not lie. I expect that.

When Romney lies it does bother me. If he wins on these lies I'll be forced to swallow the deceptions. It WILL impact me. Not something I can choose to ignore.

It's not the lies it's the actions that take place based upon the lies.
