Kingman woman accused of taking her kids' Christmas cash

KINGMAN (AP) - An Arizona woman and her boyfriend remained jailed Friday after being accused of stealing Christmas money from her children during a holiday visit.

Amanda Sue Rick, 31, and Cruz Alberto Ruvalcaba, 29, were arrested on Christmas Day for possession of drug paraphernalia, probation violations and outstanding warrants.

Mohave County sheriff's deputies responded to a theft report Wednesday at a home in Kingman where the four young children were spending the holiday with their grandparents, sheriff's spokeswoman Patricia Carter said.

"The grandparents had given the kids $10 each as a Christmas gift," Carter said Friday.

Later in the day, Carter said, they allowed Rick to visit her children whose father has custody of them.

When Rick and Ruvalcaba left, the grandparents discovered they had taken $30 from the three youngest kids.

Deputies tracked the pair down walking along a nearby street and arrested them on the unrelated charges. Rick was still carrying the $30 cash.

She told authorities that her children gave her the money so she could get a motel room, and they could visit her there, Carter said.

"Who knows exactly how the transaction went down. The mother could have just taken it from them or given them some sappy story," she said. "It sounds like she was baiting them."

The couple won't face charges for theft because the children's father declined to press charges.

Telephone numbers associated with the two suspects were disconnected. It wasn't clear if they had attorneys.

I think the point is why is it the Prescott Courier printing this, it didn't happen even in our county. Nobody really cares and the children don't need to be exposed to this silly stuff .. you don't think they may look it up one day?? I am sure they will have enough issues growing up! It is just sensationalism at its best. Good job Prescott Courier!

@ From the Kingman newspaper !!....

Talk about only reading what you want. The article states........

"In addition to being charged with felony possession of drug paraphernalia, Rick was arrested on three misdemeanor warrants for failure to pay fines and one misdemeanor warrant for probation violation.

Ruvalcaba was charged with felony possession of drug paraphernalia along with misdemeanor warrants for failure to pay fines and probation violation. Kingman Municipal Court issued the warrants for both of them"

FELONY drug possession. That makes the posting of the pictures within the guidelines that the DC uses.

These poor kids are learning from their druggie parents! Congratulations Grandparents for trying to teach them right from wrong. Too many of these kids have no role models with values! My congratulations to the Grandparents for trying to teach them! Get these kids out of their parents care so they don't become another one of Prescott's drug rehab problems!

This is from the Kingman newspaper.

A short time later, deputies located the pair one block away. A record check showed Rick was wanted on four misdemeanor warrants issued by Kingman Municipal Court, one for probation violation and three for failure to pay fines. Ruvalcaba was wanted on a probation violation and a failure to pay fines warrant issued by Kingman Municipal Court.

Note the violations were misdemeanors. Wish I could say that the courier was a positive contributor to the community rather than a trash collector.

This is truly unwarranted. I didn't see anything about the murder of a child on Christmas by the mother in Casa Grand. I would expect that is more newsworthy than this crap!!!

The dCourier ran this piece but AP initiated the story. Rags and television throughout the state and possibly beyond are running it with snaps included. HOW DARE THEY! The only behaviour more horrid than reporting this non-story would be stealing Christmas money from your children.

This is the courier at its best , tell the whole story before you get people upset! The story is so incomplete this is how gossip starts...

This petty crime didn't even happen in our county. Maybe that is why the DC saw nothing wrong with exploiting these hurting children and their drug addicted mother. The turkey-thrower story was also exploitation but no names or pictures were included. "no harm done" Moreover the turkey-throwing altercation at least happened in Prescott.

I agree with the posters that are concerned for her young children. It is hard enough to have a junky for a mother without having that fact paraded across the state. What purpose was served? Why?

"tell it like it is" is right! Go read the freaking Kingman Daily. There's a TON more to the story. They gave you the link. Geez.

Article comment by: @ pictures and felonies

Haven't you figured it out yet, they just want people to blog, they can justify printing their liberal views, by the numbers of readership and bloggers. That way they can show how dumb readers are by stirring up things like the school bond , the shooting range issue, the tragedy of the 19, etc. This is a gossip mag~paper at best!!

FYI .. I agree this story should never have been printed, I feel for their children.

Article comment by: tell it like it is! Justified

Maybe the people who commented that the "poor" mother and boy friend were not charged with the theft and that no charges were pressed should have read the attached story from the Kingman Daily Miner before they wrote their comments.
This mother and her friend were in possession of Drug And Syringes while visiting her kids, putting those innocent children at risk. And to top it off they had warrants out for their arrest. And Ricks is lucky or she would be dead by a justified shooting and that would have saved us TAX PAYERS some money!!!

Article comment by: Courier Wake UP!

You don't think these children we be able to read some day, maybe some of them already do. You have just set these children up to be bullied by their peers , when parents and neighbors start talking about this around their friends. Obviously these children have plenty of issues, without this! Sad .. with all the inaccurate stuff you already print , about ready to unsubscribe and stop reading !!!

Article comment by: Read Thewords

If you read, these folks were arrested for outstanding warrants, drug paraphernalia possession, & probation violations, not for 30$ taken from her kids. Makes for a funny headline though? DC is prime time, people.

You people are missing the point. You're supposed to be thinking, "Look at those bad drug users, stealing money from children. All drug users must be punished."

Article comment by: J Packer

So the majority of John Q.Public want law abusers to own up to their misdeeds & then when they are held accountable, some one HAS to cry 'Fowl'--shame, shame! Take them to task! Maybe this will get these druggies some 'help'. To take away from your children to support your habit is about as rotten as life can get for a child that only wants 'Mama' to love them. Keep your eye on the ball!

This is a new low for the Courier. I dont know why I am surprised but putting up pictures is low even for this rag. What they did is unbelievable but printing it is almost as bad.

Article comment by: Better re-read for content readers

Umm....some of you that posted comments may want to re-read the article.....
"Deputies tracked the pair down walking along a nearby street and ARRESTED THEM on the unrelated charges."

That's why their pictures were published.

Although it does seem odd that the "unrelated charges" weren't further described in the article. Obviously the "theft" story was a better headline grabber, and the "arrest" justified printing the story.

This is crazy. I thought pictures were only for people who commit felonies. The courier and it's ownership are part of the problem here. Don't jay walk or your picture will be in the paper.
