Couple arrested for allegedly abusing girl, 4
The Daily Courier

A couple was arrested Tuesday on charges including felony child abuse after a faculty member at a local school alerted police to signs of possible abuse of a 4-year-old female student.

After arriving at the school, the officer met with the faculty member and then the girl. The officer saw a round bruise on the child's cheek that was so severe it could be seen inside her mouth, as well as scratches on her neck, face and ears, Prescott Police Lt. Ken Morley said.

The girl made statements to the officer that caused concern and Child Protective Services was notified, Morley said.

The girl was taken to Yavapai Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation and was later interviewed by the staff at Yavapai Family Advocacy Center.

The girl had bruising all over her body - some of the bruises appearing older than others - and there were indications of sexual abuse, Morley said.

Prescott police investigators tracked down the girl's guardians, who both said they did not notice anything unusual or any significant bruising on the girl and denied anything related to sexual abuse, Morley said.

According to the investigators, the couple showed very little concern about the girl and blamed the injuries on normal childhood mishaps.

Officers arrested the couple and booked them into the Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde on felony child abuse charges. The woman was also charged with felony sexual abuse of a child.

The girl and her 2-year-old brother are in the custody of Child Protective Services, Morley said.

If they wre arrested for a felony - child abuse is a felongy - why aren't the names of those arrested included - and photo?

EDITOR'S NOTE It is the Courier's policy to do so, except when simply put it inadvertently identifies the victim.

I just want to say, as a retired teacher, how proud I am of the teacher, administrator and staff for acting on this immediately and calling in the authorities. This child and her sibling's lives may have been saved because of their dedication to children. Thank you, caring educators, you make us all proud.

To Mr. D. Cleaver - If you "never looked back" after leaving the fine but spiraling city of Prescott why are you still reading the Courier?
I pray for these children that have come to harm by those that are to protect them the most.

Obviously you did look back if you keep checking the paper here. You should fully move on and leave your opinion out of our town

Thank you to the staff member(s) at the school that were alert, aware and not intimidated to report. You may have been this child's only line of defense. Thank you for making that phone call!

Seriously Dennis Cleaver?? You don't think that this sort of thing happens in every city, town, county, & neighborhood in the U.S.? Maybe you should move back in with your brother Beaver, where nothing bad ever happens.

Another couple of Prescott's finest here. I would love to tell you what I would should happen to these people (if proven guilty), but this is a public forum.

Another example of the "downward spiral trend" of the once fine city of Prescott.

Another reason for us to be thankful that our entire family left that city 8 years ago and never looked back.

Lets just hope a loving husband and wife will love and respect these little children IN THE EVENT that they will be placed within the correct home and enviroment.
