CASA volunteer help needed for 'Darlha and Colin'
Special to the Courier

A CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer is needed for 9-year-old "Darlha" and her 6-year-old brother, "Colin." The children were placed in a foster home after the parents were incarcerated for domestic violence and no relatives were available to care for them. The parents are quite young and have a history of mental health and substance abuse issues. The children had been removed from them on a previous occasion, and treatment services provided at that time permitted the parents to resume caring for them.

Among the CASA volunteer's responsibilities: monitoring the progress of Darlha and Colin in their foster home; working with their therapist regarding any mental health issues they may be facing; talking with their physician and teachers to keep abreast of their physical health and education needs; assisting CPS in working with the parents when they are released from jail to determine whether services such as parenting classes and treatment for mental health and substance abuse issues might result in them being able to resume caring for their children; attending monthly meetings with the children, their parents and other team members involved in the case; and making recommendations to the judge as to the best long-term placement for these children. CASA volunteers need to provide information to the court at report and review hearings throughout the life of a case.

Anyone interested in becoming a CASA volunteer for this case or a similar one, and making a difference in the life of a child, may contact the CASA office at 771-3165.

EDITOR'S NOTE: These children's names have been changed to protect the identities of those involved, and these children are not eligible for adoption at this time.
