PRESCOTT - A man is in the hospital after allegedly stealing a Jeep from a campsite while naked, driving off and then crashing it.

About 8 a.m. Friday, a man called 911 saying his Jeep had been stolen from a campground at Lynx Lake. The caller told dispatchers that the man was naked and "out of his mind" on drugs, said YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn.

Just before sheriff's deputies arrived at the campsite, the caller said he heard the Jeep crash, and deputies found it along Enchanted Forest Road, along with Calvin Forrey, 27, of Prescott and his pit bull.

The dog attacked a deputy, causing minor injuries, and the deputy shot and killed the dog.

Deputies eventually were able to subdue Forrey, who was naked and uncooperative, with the aid of an electric stun gun, and he was taken into custody

Forrey was transported to Yavapai Regional Medical Center. He did not have "significant observable injuries," D'Evelyn said, and he was apparently not hurt in the crash, but Forrey was under observation in the hospital's ICU. It is unknown at this time what factors caused Forrey's behavior, D'Evelyn said.

Paramedics were performing CPR on Forrey as they loaded him into the ambulance at the campground; a radio call from a deputy reported that Forrey had stopped breathing, but that could not be confirmed.

The deputy bitten by the pit bull was treated and expected to fully recover, D'Evelyn said. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau were on the scene throughout the day investigating the incident.

D'Evelyn said deputies had also encountered Forrey the previous Monday when they responded to a disorderly conduct call at to his home. He admitted to deputies that he had used the synthetic drug "bath salts" in the past, said D'Evelyn, but claimed he was not under the influence at that time and was not arrested.

It is unknown at this time if Forrey was under the influence of any drugs during Friday's incident, D'Evelyn said.

This young man mentioned in this article was one of my beloved grandchildren, who has paid the ultimate price for using this horrible drug. He loved the dog who had to be euthanized. The dog was trying to protect Calvin from what he perceived as a threat, but actually was keeping needed care from his owner. I hope the office who was bitten is ok. What we need to do now is wage war on this drug and the greedy, uncaring people who sell it. It is easily available, not too expensive, and when it is banned, the suppliers change the makeup of the drug so that they can continue selling it. It is also available from other countries. One thing that might help is lots of information going out to everyone, especially families with children. If you mention this drug to someone, many times they haven't even heard of it.

Article comment by: People Selling Bath Salts

The people selling the poisons (bath salts) are right at your local convenience stores. Yes - right where you might stop to get gas or buy a soda. Drug dealers who manufacture these dangerous chemical concoctions keep changing the compounds to get around the law and then continue to sell them 'legally.' These are highly addictive and dangerous drugs causing death and psychosis – which in some cases may be a permanent mental condition. Our town needs more people who will stand up against these merchants and say “enough!” The Courier has published articles and other police reports on this very subject.

Article comment by: BUST the people selling BATH SALTS!!!

Sad about the dog attacking, I hate that somebody got bit, and also that the dog got shot. I have no idea what these bath salts are, but come on drug takers! They are making people more CRAZY it seems than any of the other drugs. What's the deal, and who is selling them? I have a pretty good idea of who were and wouldn't step foot near one of those businesses again. We're seeing more and more articles about the affects of theses designer drugs, and these (people) are buying them somewhere. If the drug users know where to buy them, then police must surely know/suspect in town of this size. It would take about 5 minutes to figure out where the source is and these sellers need to be cracked down on or at least held in the same location with somebody who is under the influence of the substance they're pedaling. Maybe they would see the insane behavior and stop making them available. PLEASE, NO MORE BATH SALTS!

@ Ralph Kyner.
Your statement "its no surprise that most of the dog attacks are pit bulls" is an opinion shared by many. It is also completely false.
The attacks you read about in the news may well be dominated by certain breeds, but it is usually because it sells papers.
If you look hard enough in most any news source at past reports of dog attacks you will find that news sources generally doe not report the breed except in the case if Pit Bulls.
Let's face facts, being bit by a Tea-cup poodle is not news.
When I was a kid it was the Doberman that was the evil killer dog we were told to fear. Now that Pit Bulls are the big news it seems the Doberman's have stopped attacking us.

Article comment by: Not Thinking Of The Dog

This story is concerning because it takes place somewhere I visit often with my children. Naked man on drugs steals car, we are very fortunate he did no harm to anyone but himself. But most the comments are defending the poor DOG! Really? Don't get me wrong, love dogs and I do not have anything against the breed. This is about these (people) getting high and invading our public space, yeah for the officers catching his guy. What if the dog had run off in his scared state, then bite someone else? Then all the comments would be "Why didn't the cop shoot the dog when he had the chance?" Think people!

I've survived torture and combat only at the age of ripe old age of 50 to go and work for a national delivery/logistics company and lose part of my finger (and I love the medical lingo: "radical amputation of first digit, left hand by aggressive canine") within the first 3 months of employment. I'll vote shoot the dog every time! Oh, and my former team members could not stop laughing when they heard about the incident knowing what I've lived through.

Did you people miss the part that Mr. Forrey (a.k.a. Naked Guy) was having CPR administered as he was being transported to the Hospital?

Since you did - that means the Naked Guy was laying there unconscious while emergency responders had to deal with an aggressive dog before being able to tend to a HUMAN in critical need!

If it comes to saving a HUMAN or sparing a DOG...the HUMAN better win every time!

@ Ron Burgandy, I don't think they printed the whole story. It's not as if the deputy wantonly shot the dog. He was attacked first. What do you propose a person do when attacked by a pitbull? I know all the pit bull lovers are quick to jump in on what a gentle breed of dog it is. And how its the way the dog was raised and trained. But, its no suprise that most of the dog attacks are pit bulls. Maybe Pitbull owners should be registered and have to go thru classes. "What to expect when you are raising a 4 legged time bomb".

This cop used excessive force on the poor dog. Obviously the dog was scared and was trying to protect his owner. Think before you shoot. It's not the dog's fault that the owner was out if his mind. Think outside the box, I know it's hard for most cops to do.

Article comment by: To those who think the Taser is best @

Regarding the comments that the Deputy should have used his Taser on the dog. You should know that there are cases when dogs have been Tased that they suffer serious neurological problems based on the there genetics. Officer's K9's who have been tased during a fight usually have to be retired because they can no longer function properly. So I'm not sure using the Taser is the best option on a dog which could result in years of suffering for the animal. A taser only last for a few seconds and there is no guarantee it will work. Even if it worked what was the Deputy supposed to do take the time to tie up the dog and put it in his car while the idiot is still running around naked possibly harming someone else. It's easy to say he should of done this or that, but faulting him for doing his job which resulted in what appears to have taken a dangerous individual off the street is wrong and sad to say the least

What they should do is start training law enforcement on how to deal with animals, if they do this the officer could have told the guy "time out" then take some time (not a lot of time mabey 30-45 minutes) to feed and pet the dog so it wouldnt be scared. Once the dog was taken care of (the main priority in a situation like this) he then would be able to deal with the suspect without worrying about the dogs needs. A simple solution for a situation like this. Because after all this is prescott where animals come before humans

Article comment by: shoot the owner stun the dog

It is well proven that pit bulls are not aggressive by nature it is the owner that falls under the responsible party for aggressiveness in pitbulls... with that being said, any dog can be made into a killer, the only difference is pit bulls have one of the most powerful jaws in the canine family.
And to those who stick up for the cop shooting and killing dog, I understand you have to protect yourself, but why is it protocol to tase an aggressive person? Is your point being that police have these tasers to avoid mountains of paper work? I doubt it.. however that's how it can be perceived when you make a comment such as these ones made here. And to joe pandoli.. if you've ever actually seen a pitbul in real life.. they're a short hair breed. I don't think its 'fur' and even if it were classified as 'fur' its still short hair! You're telling me that these barbs that can penetrate even a husky person from up to 15 to 20 feet away isn't going to penetrate a dog? I'm all for the cop protecting himself while under attack however, he was conscious enough to grab his gun. Why couldn't he have been conscious enough to grab his taser? If any one has some actual concrete proof that tasers are inaffective on short hair breed dogs then I will apologize and step down.. however the real issue at hand is this dog was scared, its owner was not acting normal prior to the accident due to the use of 'bath salts' then got into a pretty scary car crash even for a human.. the dog was merely protecting its owner.. and to all you anti pit bull advocates out there you can keep your uneducated comments to yourselves! Because until you spend time with a pitbull that is loved and cared for by its owners, you have no idea how loyal and loving they can be! I've grown up around pitbulls my entire life, and I can personally attest to this! Here's a little food for thought in closing... I've been bit by more chiuahuahs, pomeranians, and many other ' small lap dogs' than any pitbull I've ever owned. As a matter of fact I've been bit by atleast 5 other breeds of dogs, and can honestly and truthfully say, I've nevver been bitten by a pit!

While it's too bad the dog died while doing it's "job", who was at fault? The owner....period. Rest the blame where it belongs and quit blaming the deputy who was being bit/mauled by a dog certainly capable of killing. Personal responsibility is such a difficult concept for too many in our town to understand.

Did all of you miss the part where it said the dog bit the Deputy, before he shot it?
These dogs can break bones with a bite. They also have fur coats, the barbs on a taser would have to penetrate the fur to be effective.
And. let's see any of you try to tase a dog while it's gnawing on your leg.

The best thing we can do for our community is boycott the gas stations or stores that carrier bath salts. Let them know you refuse to do business if they continue to sell these products. What if that jeep had run someone over... I know the drug does something to your mind, but if you ask me, you are already out of you mind if you feel the need to do such a thing.

When a dog is protecting is owner that is out of control, why shoot the dog. Pit bulls shouldn't be outlawed at all. It's the owners who make this dog the way it is. Any dog will get defensive when its scared or doesn 't understand what is going on. I have a pit bull and she is the most loving dog in the world. Anyone who comes to my house she will come and sit on your lap. This guy was high on something and should be prosicuted. As far as arresting the people who are selling bath salts they did arrest them. And the stores are still selling the bath salts. So you need to close the stores down and take their license away and make sure they can't get another in any other state.

To Shoot The Owner,

"I've never understood why it is protocol to shoot and kill a dog that is attacking."

Come on. If it is a genuine, full-on attack, you gotta do whatcha gotta do.

I well concede, though, that it seems some cops are a bit quick to shoot a dog... But I haven't been present at any dog shootings.

As a follow-on to my earlier comment I wonder if we are going to be forced to contend with naked "Zombies" cavorting in Granite Creek park...

Ban the "bath salts". Far too many are driving around town and on the highways under the influence of this drug. What the hell is wrong with this town allowing such things to be sold in the stores when they are illegal? Arrest anyone who is selling these "salts" and arrest anyone who knows of these sellers.
