Embry-Riddle students to launch high-altitude balloon
The Daily Courier

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Project HiBall on Thursday will launch a high-altitude balloon that will carry payload packages build by students in the Experimental Space Systems lab class containing a variety of scientific apparatus and digital cameras to photo-document the flight.

The ERAU-08 1600 gram weather balloon filled with helium will launch at 9 a.m. from the lower soccer field at the University in Prescott, and the flight is expected to last about 2 1/2 hours from launch to touchdown, said Jack Crabtree, ERAU Project HiBall mentor.

Students from North Land Preparatory Academy in Flagstaff will also launch a small balloon that 17 of the students built.

The flight can be tracked going online to the following links: aprs.fi/?call=n7eru-11 or www.finducom/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=n7eru-12, or map.aprsworld.net/n7eru-13.

Coordination communications before and during the flight will take place on the Mingus Mountain 147.220 MHz (+ offset, 162.2 Hz tone) repeater courtesy of the Verde Valley Amateur Radio Association.

Be sure to go to the website groups.yahoo.com/group/Ballooning/ for updates to this announcement prior to the flight.
