Yavapai soccer team battles desert heat in win; gears up for Phoenix
The Daily Courier

Weather has certainly played a starring role in the Yavapai College soccer team's early season.

The last couple weeks it was rain. On Saturday, it was extreme heat.

The Roughriders traveled to Southern California's Coachella Valley in Palm Desert to meet the College of the Desert Roadrunners in YC's only non-conference match of 2013. The 1 p.m. kickoff brought hot temperatures soaring over 100 degrees, but Yavapai managed to keep its perfect start intact with a 3-0 win.

The Roughriders led 1-0 at halftime on a goal from Josiah Pacheco in the 44th minute. James Ampleford and Brian Montes each added a goal after the break.

Three goalkeepers - Daniel Diaz, Bradley Trella, McKay Owsley - combined on YC's second shutout of the season.

The unranked Roadrunners (2-2-0) compete in the California Community College Athletic Association. Saturday's meeting was the first ever between the two schools, and Desert became the 78th different opponent the Roughriders have played in YC's 25-year history.

Yavapai, meanwhile, improved to 5-0-0 overall.

The stage is set for the Roughriders to return to town for their biggest ACCAC match so far.

YC hosts Phoenix this Tuesday night (6 p.m.) at Mountain Valley Park in Prescott Valley. The Roughriders are ranked No. 5 among Division 1 NJCAA sides, and the Bears come in ranked No. 8 as two of the nation's Top 10 clubs square off.

Phoenix sits atop the Arizona league with a 5-0-0 mark in league play with Yavapai close behind at 4-0-0 in Arizona play.
