High School teams learn their playoff fates as state brackets open
Baseball pairings include county-county 1st-round Div. 3 matchup
The Daily Courier

The road to a state championship got a whole lot clearer on Thursday for Yavapai County high school baseball and softball teams.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association released the official brackets for the state tournaments, some of which get under way on Saturday.

In Div. 2 baseball, Bradshaw Mountain, as the 24-team bracket's 21-seed, travels to Scottsdale this Saturday to take on 12-seed Saguaro in the Bears' playoff opener. First pitch is at 11 a.m. That game's winner advances to face 5-seed Sunnyslope on the road next Tuesday, while the season comes to an end for the loser.

In Div. 3 baseball, a Yavapai County matchup highlights this Tuesday's first round when 10-seed Chino Valley meets 23-seed Camp Verde at Surprise Sports Complex. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. The winner advances to face 7-seed Willcox next Friday, also in Surprise.

Also in Div. 3 baseball, Cottonwood's Mingus Union, as the 6-seed, enjoys a first-round bye. The Marauders face the winner of 22-seed Holbrook and 11-seed Morenci in the second round next Friday, at 4 p.m., in Surprise.

In Div. 4 baseball, 23-seed Bagdad clinched a spot in the 24-team bracket, and will open against 10-seed St. David on Tuesday at the Goodyear Baseball Complex. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. The winner advances to face 7-seed Pusch Ridge next Friday, also in Goodyear.

On the softball side of things, Prescott captured the Div. 2 bracket's 18-seed, and will travel to meet 15-seed Sabino in Tucson this Saturday for a 10:15 a.m. first pitch. That winner advances to face 2-seed Canyon del Oro, again in Tucson, the following Tuesday.

In Div. 3 softball, 23-seed Chino Valley will meet 10-seed River Valley in the first round next Thursday at the Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix. First pitch is at 7:30 p.m. That winner moves on to face 7-seed Snowflake the following day at 3 p.m., also at Mofford.

Also in Div. 3 softball, 20-seed Camp Verde meets 13-seed Tuba City in Thursday's opening round at Mofford at 6 p.m. That winner will take on 4-seed Benson the following day at 6 p.m. at Mofford.

And also in Div. 3 softball, 6-seed Mingus Union enjoys a first-round bye. The Marauders will face the winner of 22-seed Safford and 11-seed Window Rock next Friday at 8 p.m. at Mofford. That winner advances to the Elite 8 on May 4.
