While the Bradshaw Mountain tennis program will send its doubles teams to the state tournament later this week, the boys as a whole opened the team bracket with a win Tuesday at home.

The boys, the bracket's 4-seed, handled 13-seed Tucson Canyon del Oro in a 6-3 win in Prescott Valley. The Bears' team advances to the team quarterfinal round at state next Tuesday, where they will be home again, this time against 12-seed Phoenix Greenway.

Tuesday's playoff opener brought out the best in both clubs.

"All these matches were so, so tight," BMHS head coach Joe Borzello said. "A lot of great play from both teams. One heck of a battle."

In singles play, No. 1 Max Miller, No. 2 William Waidelich, and No. 6 Daniel Schmuckler all won in three sets. Waidelich trailed 4-1 in the third set before rallying for a 7-5 win.

In the No. 5 spot, Hunter Powell needed just two sets for a win.

Miller and Waidelich - who are prepping for their state doubles quarterfinals match this Friday night - won their match Tuesday by a 10-1 final. Schmuckler and Hunter Powell combined for a 10-8 win.

The Bradshaw tennis program has plenty of state tournament play still ahead this week.

The girls' team travels to Phoenix to tangle with Arcadia Wednesday in the team bracket.

And Miller-Waidelich will be joined at the doubles state rounds on Friday by the girls' duo of Delania Harris and Athena Bowman.

If either doubles team emerges victorious on Friday, the state doubles semifinals and state championship will take place Saturday at Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.
