A big-time men's soccer ACCAC showdown is brewing.
The nation's No. 2-ranked Yavapai Roughriders blanked Paradise Valley 4-0 Thursday night in the Valley, behind Player of the Year candidate Alex Harlley who had a goal and an assist.
Also Thursday, second-place Arizona Western shut out Scottsdale 4-0 to keep pace with the front-running Roughriders. Western (6-1, 18 points) visits Ken Lindley Field for a big tilt Sept. 20 with Yavapai (7-0, 21 points).
In Thursday's win, the YC goals came in bunches.
After both sides played to a scoreless halftime, Yavapai's Jonathan Grant and Harlley connected within three minutes of each other. Some 20 minutes later, freshman defender Milan Popovic scored twice in an electrifying one-minute stretch.
The Roughrider offense pounded 32 shots on goal and offered 10 corner kicks.
Defensively, sophomore keeper Daniel Sellitti pitched a 90-minute shutout for the team's sixth shutout of the season.
Also Thursday, Pima, which has played in the last two Region 1 Championship matches and won in 2011, tied Phoenix 1-1 in overtime. Pima has two losses and two ties in its seven matches this season, and already is 10 points behind the Roughriders.
Before the Western showdown at Lindley, Yavapai has two matches. The Roughriders head to Tucson this Saturday (2 p.m.) to meet Pima for their first match with the Aztecs this season.
Then the 'Riders host South Mountain on Sept. 18 in a make-up match following this week's previously-scheduled rainout in Prescott.
