Over the summer the Humboldt Unified School District is sponsoring the Summer Food Service Program.

HUSD has four sites open that have provided a free breakfast and lunch for children who are 18 and younger.

During the Summer Food Service Program, the district has several organizations' members who donate their time and knowledge, including Heritage Park Sanctuary, Rummel Eye Care, Kidzaam Dentistry and Yavapai County Health Services. Children are entertained by animals, educated about good dental care, good nutrition and are treated to free eye and oral exams.

It is a wonderful summer of great food, fun and community, the district administration stated in a news release.

Team Members

Accomplishments and In-Services

The Food and Nutrition team is constantly participating in meaningful activities to better serve HUSD students. Summer 2014, the Food and Nutrition Team members are offered six in-service trainings: two sessions for CPR/First Aid, two sessions of Nutrition 101, Culinary knife skills and back-to-school in-service training.

Breakfast in the Classroom Pilot

The Food and Nutrition Department successfully partnered with Principal Young's team at Humboldt Elementary School to provide Breakfast in the Classroom.

The program, which is intended to feed students enabling them to have increase focus in the classroom, has been a huge success and will continue for the upcoming school year.

Breakfast participation has doubled over past year.

New Point of Sale and Online Pay

The Food and Nutrition Department purchased a new Point of Sale for all cafeterias. Students are able to enter their student number at two locations; therefore, increasing line speed.

Parents also are able to make payments to student meal accounts and view their child's participation by going to myschoolbucks.com.

Compliance with new USDA standards

This year the USDA requires all grains served in the National School Lunch Program and Breakfast Program to be whole grain rich. Unlike some schools that are having some difficulty, the Humboldt schools will be 100 percent compliant at the beginning of the 2014-15 school year.

Grants

Food and nutrition has been working on a "Fuel up to Play 60" grant application with the physical education teachers at Liberty Traditional and Bradshaw Mountain Middle schools.

This grant would bring $4,000 to each school to encourage physical activity and good nutrition. Results should be available later in July.
