Sign up for healthcare with help from county
Special to the Courier

The Yavapai County Community Health Center (YCCHS) has three full-time certified application counselors stationed in Prescott, Prescott Valley and Cottonwood, ready to help you understand how the Affordable Care Act and the new "insurance marketplace" will affect you. The counselors can also help you understand which of the six insurance companies and 74 different policies have healthcare providers in Yavapai County and which do not.

On March 31, the "marketplace" closes and, without a qualifying event, like losing a job that provided insurance, you will have to wait until October of this year to get insurance through the marketplace. People without insurance in 2014 may be subject to the "Individual Responsibility Requirement" fine for not having insurance. The fine can be as much as 1 percent of your household's annual income (example: $400 for a family making $40,000 per year).

One benefit of purchasing insurance through the marketplace is that if you are making less than 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, you may be eligible for a tax subsidy to help pay the monthly premium.

If you make 133 percent or less of the Federal Poverty Level, you may qualify for Medicaid/AHCCCS in 2014, even if you do not have a dependent child. YCCHS can help you with either application, but time is running out to get insurance through the Marketplace.

For more information, visit and click on the Affordable Care link at the top or call 442-5208 to set up an appointment with a certified application counselor near you.

@ Be Aware...Exactly. I caught it before I enrolled, but Aetna should be more upfront about their network. BlueCross BlueShield has very few providers in the area. I enrolled with HealthNet after talking to someone from the county that was extremely knowledgable and helpful. Check the providers before you sign up!

Anything having to do with ACA is a nightmare.
I am no longer wasting my time with this obamacare!
Let them fine me, if they dare! If the plan is even still around by then!

We enrolled in Aetna and paid our first premium for January. Last week they sent us a letter stating Yavapai county is considered out of network. Only Maricopa and Pinal counties will be in network. This essentially doubles out of pocket costs or requires a long drive to get medical care. We had to get "special permission" to return to the site and enroll in a different plan because once you pay you are not allowed to change until open enrollment in October! Be aware of this as Aetna is still accepting applicants with no indication that our county is out of network.
