Accident updates: 3 injured in separate crashes improving

A bicyclist injured in a collision on Highway 89 south of Prescott last week has improved from critical to fair condition, John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital spokeswoman Susan Fuchs said Tuesday morning.

Frank Colella, 54, was riding a bicycle at milepost 307 on Highway 89 the morning of Monday, June 10, when he was struck by a Jeep Cherokee driven by James Baskit Tucker, 21, DPS spokesman Carrick Cook said.

When Prescott Firefighters and Life Line Ambulance paramedics arrived, they found Colella unconscious with significant injuries and immediately requested a helicopter take him to a trauma center, Prescott Fire spokesman Conrad Jackson said.

A DPS spokesman said information about the collision was forwarded to the Yavapai County Attorney's Office, which will determine whether citations or charges will be filed.

A moped rider injured in a collision Monday remains in critical but stable condition, John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital spokeswoman Susan Fuchs said Tuesday morning.

The woman, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a head injury in a collision with a semi-truck at 11 a.m. Monday on Highway 89 north of Prescott, a DPS spokesman said.

A DPS spokesman said information about the collision was forwarded to the Yavapai County Attorney's Office, which will determine whether citations or charges will be filed.

A 31-year-old Prescott Valley bicyclist injured Tuesday in a collision is in good condition, Fuchs said Wednesday.

Prescott Valley Police Sgt. Brandon Bonney said witnesses told officers the woman, Chancie L. Lofflin, rode her bicycle north on Tani Road with her 2-year-old daughter in a carrier, did not yield at a stop sign at Lakeshore Drive, and struck a vehicle traveling westbound on Lakeshore.

Lofflin was seriously injured and flown to the Phoenix hospital, while her daughter was taken to Yavapai Regional Medical Center East Campus in Prescott Valley for treatment of what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

When asked for an update on the girl's condition, YRMC Spokeswoman Robbie Nicol said Wednesday "I'm not able to give any information about a 2-year-old patient."

Witnesses told officers they smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Lofflin, and investigators will determine if impairment was possibly a factor in the collision, Bonney said.

Child Protective Services were called to help place the child into a safe home, and detectives are investigating any possible child abuse or endangerment, Bonney said.

The moral to the story is don't ride your bicycle in the street. It simply is not a safe thing to do. Please, no rants about laws and rights. This isn't about your perceived rights, it's about your safety.
